Taking advantage of the proximity between a wastewater treatment plant and an incinerator, a methanization unit was recently inaugurated on the Sausheim site, in the suburbs of Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), reports France 3 Grand-Est on Monday.

Thanks to the sludge from the station, heated by the incineration plant, this unit is able to produce biomethane.

Fuel for buses

Each year, two million cubic meters of gas can be produced and integrated into the GRDF network in order to heat nearly 5,000 low-consumption homes or run 125 buses.

In addition, for the first time in France, this unit is equipped with a phosphorus recovery system, which will make it possible to produce 90 tonnes per year, which can be used as fertilizer.

In total, more than 15 million euros of investments as well as 24 months of work were necessary to build this infrastructure.

It should pay for itself in nine years, according to Francis Hillmeyer, president of Sivom in the Mulhouse region.
