Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, announced that the emirate has achieved a 33% reduction in carbon emissions during 2020, exceeding the target percentage in the “Dubai Strategy for Reducing Carbon Emissions 2021” by more than double. emissions by 16% by 2021.

He added, "This achievement of reducing carbon emissions in the emirate by 33% during 2020, confirms that we are moving forward rapidly to achieve the strategic goals of transition to a carbon neutral economy by 2050, to ensure a brighter and more sustainable future for our future generations."

Initiatives and Programs

Al Tayer explained that the initiatives and programs implemented by the bodies and institutions under the umbrella of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy have contributed to achieving this significant reduction in carbon emissions.

He continued: "Among the factors that have achieved this achievement are the increase in the proportion of the production capacity of renewable and clean energy, which currently stands at 11.38% of the total energy mix in Dubai, and the expansion in the use of district cooling systems, which contributed to providing 650 GWh of electricity in 2020, and the incentives that It encouraged the increased use of electric cars, and other pioneering initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in Dubai.”

Climate change

For his part, Secretary-General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, stressed that this achievement confirms the importance of concerted efforts of individuals and institutions to support national and global efforts aimed at curbing the phenomena of climate change and global warming.

He said that Dubai has a plan for the next 30 years, which includes the energy and water sector, transport sector, industry and buildings, and waste, and the plan includes enablers, systems, research and development.
