The Conference of Transport Ministers has decided to extend the deadline for exchanging paper driving licenses.

The Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture announced in Erfurt on Friday that a joint resolution proposal from Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt had been accepted.

Citizens should not run the risk of "negotiating a fine for invalid driving licenses if it was hardly possible to apply for an exchange of old driving licenses due to the pandemic," said Minister Susanna Karawansky (Left).

The interior ministers' conference is now supposed to initiate a nationwide procedure in case an expired old driver's license is presented during an inspection.

From the point of view of the Conference of Transport Ministers, a fine should then be refrained from and a six-month period should be granted to submit a valid EU driving license.

According to the EU Driving License Directive, all holders of a driving license must have a card driving license by January 19, 2033.

The exchange of paper driving licenses is staggered.

First of all, those born between 1953 and 1958 with a paper driver's license must have exchanged for an EU card driver's license.

The deadline was previously January 19, 2022.
