New improvement on the employment front.

After an exceptional increase in the second quarter of 2021, private salaried employment increased again, by 0.5%, in the third quarter, or 95,200 net job creations, according to the final estimate published on Wednesday by INSEE.

A markedly smaller increase than in the previous quarter (+ 1.5%, or +285,300 jobs), which was mainly due to the reopening in June in services (accommodation and catering, cultural services, etc.).

The estimate is identical to the provisional estimate published on November 5.

Private salaried employment had returned to its pre-crisis level in the second quarter.

In total, at the end of September 2021, private salaried employment exceeded its level prior to the pandemic (i.e. that of the end of 2019) by 1% (190,600 jobs).

Temporary employment on the rise

Temporary employment, a compass for the job market, continues to recover: + 1.6% (+12,100 jobs) after + 3.1% in the first half of the year.

Despite everything, it remains slightly below its pre-crisis level, falling at the end of September 0.8% below its level at the end of 2019, with a decline of 6,600 jobs.

Excluding temporary work, despite a slight increase in the 3rd quarter (+ 0.1%, as in the 2nd), industrial employment at the end of September remained well below its level at the end of 2019: -1.3% or -41,300 jobs.

In the commercial services sector excluding temporary work, private salaried employment slows down after the jump in the previous quarter: + 0.8% after + 2.2% (+92,100 after +255,500 jobs).

At the end of September 2021, employment in this sector exceeded its level at the end of 2019 by 1.1% (+128,900 jobs).

Public employment in slow motion

In construction, private salaried employment (excluding temporary work) fell slightly (−0.2% or −3,700 jobs) but remained well above its pre-crisis level: + 4.5% compared to the end of 2019 (+64,500 jobs).

Likewise, in the third quarter of 2021, private salaried employment in the non-market tertiary sector stabilized (0.1% or +5,600 jobs), after + 0.4% the previous quarter.

It is 1.5% above its level at the end of 2019, particularly in health (+ 3.9%, or +61,800 jobs).

For its part, public employment also slowed down in the third quarter, but more slightly: + 0.2% (+13,000 jobs) after + 0.4% (+24,200 jobs) in the previous quarter.

It exceeds its level at the end of 2019 by 1.2% (+70,300).
