Long sunshine time, long frost-free period, good soil quality, abundant arable land, high level of agricultural mechanization... The unique geographical, water, soil, and climatic conditions have created a favorable environment for the cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials in Xinjiang.

In recent years, the planting area of Chinese medicinal materials in Xinjiang has continued to increase. Safflower, licorice, fritillaria and other Chinese medicinal materials have achieved large-scale and standardized development. The establishment of breeding bases and production bases for fine varieties of Chinese medicinal materials has enabled many farmers and herdsmen to increase their incomes.

Has Xinjiang's traditional Chinese medicinal materials industry become a dominant industry?

What is the future development momentum?

Tianshan Saussurea, Ili Fritillaria, Xinjiang Lithospermum, Fukang Awei... The vast and abundant Xinjiang has created diverse geographic environments, climatic conditions and biological resources. A large number of native characteristic medicinal materials are distributed in plateaus, forests, grasslands, and deserts, especially Traditional Chinese medicine is rich in national medicine resources and ranks in the forefront of the country. The advantages of wild authentic medicinal materials and bulk medicinal materials are outstanding.

According to statistics, Xinjiang’s licorice, safflower, Cistanche, Artemisia cistanche and other bulk medicinal materials planted an area of nearly one million acres, and many companies have set up "customized medicinal gardens" in the main production areas of Chinese medicinal materials.

In recent years, Xinjiang has successively issued special plans and policy measures such as the "Thirteenth Five-Year Development Plan for Traditional Chinese Medicine Health Services", and "Implementation of the Implementation Plan of the National Chinese Medicine Development Strategic Plan (2016-2030)" to promote Chinese herbal medicines. Protect planting, R&D and processing, market mobility, and personnel training to stimulate the development potential of Xinjiang's traditional Chinese medicine industry.

At present, there are more than 50 traditional Chinese medicine industrial enterprises in Xinjiang, more than 50 varieties of traditional Chinese medicines have been listed, more than 30 new Chinese medicine projects for real estate in Xinjiang, more than 40 cultivation projects, and initial results have been achieved in the standardization of traditional Chinese medicine.

The reporter went deep into the Ili River Valley, Altay Region, and Ta'e Basin to conduct investigations on the cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials, industrial development, R&D and processing in Xinjiang.

  Standardize planting and improve quality

When the reporter came to Gucheng Central Village, Jiuyunjie Town, Fukang City, Xinjiang, more than 300 acres of Banlangen had been harvested in the Chinese medicinal planting base.

"The main varieties of Chinese medicinal materials in our planting base are Radix Isatidis, Peppermint, Artemisia sphaerocephala, and Vanilla." said Yang Chenguang, the person in charge of the Fukang planting base of Xinjiang Yinduoran Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

  Good medicine is good.

In recent years, Xinjiang’s reputation for Chinese medicinal materials has not only relied on geographical advantages, but to a large extent because Xinjiang has worked hard in the cultivation and management of Chinese medicinal materials, and continuously improved the quality and technical content of Chinese medicinal materials.

Xinjiang Yinduoran Pharmaceutical has more than 50 years of pharmaceutical heritage, and it is the first national high-tech enterprise in Xinjiang's pharmaceutical industry to pass the new national GMP certification.

Chen Ju, chief engineer of Xinjiang Yinduoran Pharmaceutical, said that in order to ensure the quality of medicines from the source, Xinjiang Yinduoran Pharmaceutical has gradually established nearly 2,000 acres of traditional Chinese medicine ethnic medicinal materials planting demonstration bases since 2014. Standardized and large-scale planting of 20 characteristic medicinal materials such as mint and fennel.

"While focusing on the construction of the base, the company has also established the "Technical Specification for the Production of Artemisia annua". With the model of "company + farmer + scientific research institution", it has realized the promotion and demonstration base of nearly 3,000 acres of standardized planting technology and increased the planting scale of Chinese medicinal materials. And technical level. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the planting base area is expected to increase to 5,000 mu." Chen Ju said.

Last year, Xinjiang proposed to strengthen the breeding bases and production bases of Chinese medicinal materials such as Cistanche, Radix isatidis, licorice, safflower, Fritillaria, etc., and formulate technical specifications for the collection of Chinese medicinal materials, primary processing of the production area, ecological planting, wild tending, and imitating wild cultivation. Standardized cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials to promote the improvement of the quality of Chinese medicinal materials and the high-quality development of the Chinese medicinal materials industry.

This autumn, the Chinese medicinal planting base in Yingmaili Village, Tastobie Township, Gongliu County, Xinjiang, was extremely busy. Harvesting of Astragalus and Radix isatidis has been completed.

"From seedling raising, transplanting, management and protection to harvesting, there are technical staff on-site guidance throughout the process. We will also teach the villagers planting techniques to drive them to increase their income and become rich." said Zhao Dehong, the person in charge of the planting base.

This planting base is one of the "experimental fields" of the local pharmaceutical company, Xinjiang Xinjiamingyuan Chinese Medicine Decoction Pieces Co., Ltd.

In 2016, the company tried to plant 100 mu of Chinese medicinal materials such as Astragalus, Codonopsis, Radix Isatidis in four towns in Gongliu County. By this year, the transfer land area of Tastobie Township has grown to 10,000 mu of Chinese medicinal materials, and a Chinese medicinal material planting base has been established. .

This year, Xinjiang proposed to support the construction of 14 “customized medicinal gardens” of Chinese medicinal materials including comfrey, safflower, hollyhock, fragrant green orchid, and donkey-hide gelatin, and adopted the model of “company + scientific research institution + cooperative/farmer” to promote the standardized planting of Chinese medicinal materials in Xinjiang Breeding, forming standardized technical standards suitable for the cultivation and breeding of local Chinese medicinal materials, and actively recruiting low-income people to find jobs in their hometowns, increasing income from the cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials.

Sun Xuelian, secretary of the Party branch of Yingmaili Village in Tastobie Township, said that in the past, the villagers’ income from planting traditional crops was 700 to 1,000 yuan per mu of land, but now through land transfer, the cost of per mu is 700 yuan.

At the same time, it liberates labor from the land.

"The income from working in a year is about 30,000 yuan, and the per mu of land is more than 1,000 yuan." Sun Xuelian said.

The implementation of a number of measures has not only expanded the planting scale of traditional Chinese medicinal materials in Xinjiang, but also continuously improved planting standards and planting techniques.

In the Altay region of northern Xinjiang, Kurmish Village, Saltam Township, Habahe County, has built more than 1,000 acres of licorice seed production base and 4,000 acres of licorice seedling base.

Yan Xin, deputy general manager of Xinjiang Huicheng Chinese Herbal Medicine Planting Technology Co., Ltd., a base management company, introduced that the purpose of seed production and seedling production is to unify varieties, improve quality, and increase farmers' enthusiasm for planting.

"At present, we are formulating six standards for licorice seed production standards, astragalus seedling raising and transplanting standards, and Isatis root planting and transplanting in the Altay region, so that Chinese medicinal materials will be standardized in terms of seed selection, fertilization, and pest control."

Link production and sales to promote development

Focusing on the industry of Chinese medicinal materials, Xinjiang has connected production and sales in recent years, has continuously promoted the construction of the industrial chain, and promoted the high-quality development of Xinjiang's Chinese medicinal materials industry by focusing on policy support, optimizing the regional layout, strengthening and expanding leading enterprises, and promoting the improvement of varieties.

In the Xinjiang Yunguang safflower planting cooperative in Hainuk Town, Qapqal County, the reporter learned that the safflower planted by the cooperative has basically sold out this year.

"Through the unified packaging and unified brand order planting model, safflower is in short supply every year, with annual sales of more than 50 million yuan." Tan Yunguang, chairman of the cooperative, introduced.

Xinjiang is the main producing area of safflower, and Qapqal County is one of the main producing areas of safflower in Xinjiang.

Yang Minshan, deputy director of the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Qapqal County, introduced that through continuous advancement of agricultural supply-side structural reforms, and vigorously developing characteristic safflower planting, safflower has become an industry that enriches the local people's income.

Relying on the advantages of resources and location, Qapqal County has attracted a large number of agricultural and special product processing enterprises to invest in the construction of factories.

"The production chain of safflower products of'production base + professional cooperatives + farmers' is gradually being formed, and the total output value of safflower has reached about 250 million yuan." Yang Minshan said.

As one of the plantations of the Chinese herbal medicine Fritillaria, the "order-based" planting in Jiergerang Township, Gongliu County, has provided a "good prescription" for the people to increase their income and get rich.

Nie Yingshan, a grower in Karatumsk Village, has been planting Chinese medicinal materials for more than 10 years. He told reporters that he has planted 15 mu of fritillary, more than 40 mu of astragalus, and 23 mu of timothy, and his annual net income is more than 100,000 yuan.

"This year's income should be better than last year. Next year, I plan to continue to expand the planting area." Nie Yingshan said.

The area of arable land in Karatumsk Village is more than 2,200 mu, and the planting area of Chinese medicinal materials is more than 1,700 mu, of which more than 85% are mainly planted with fritillaria.

In order to change the single planting mode, the village has tried planting Chinese medicinal materials such as Astragalus, Codonopsis, and Honeysuckle in recent years.

According to Wang Haiyan, secretary of the village party branch, in addition to diversified planting, the village has also transferred 3,300 acres of land this year to plant Chinese herbal medicines through the form of "enterprise + cooperative + farmer".

"Improve planting techniques, enrich planting varieties, and strengthen order-based cooperation, in order to finally resist risks and achieve increased income."

As the advantages of planting Chinese medicinal materials have become more prominent, more pharmaceutical companies and Chinese medicinal materials processing companies have settled in Xinjiang. With the "front of the car" leading, Xinjiang's Chinese medicinal materials industry has accelerated development.

In October, the astragalus planting base in Tiereketi Village, Karatuohai Town, Teks County ushered in a bumper harvest. This 100-acre planting base is managed by Tekesi Jianfeng Agriculture and Forestry Technology Co., Ltd.

As a leading local enterprise, Lijianfeng Company promotes the rapid development of the Chinese herbal medicine industry in Turks County through planting, processing and selling Chinese herbal medicines.

Zhang Yanan, assistant to the general manager of Tekesi Jianfeng Agriculture and Forestry Technology Co., Ltd., introduced that through professional inspections, the quality of the main active ingredients of Astragalus grown in Tekes County is 2 to 3 times higher than that of other producing areas, and it has become a "hot spot." goods".

"Our company has a preliminary processing workshop, and signed an order with a large pharmaceutical company this year, and is currently planning a comprehensive and standardized high-performance production line for traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces." Zhang Yanan said.

Habahe County is a big county for the cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials. Not only has it attracted many enterprises to settle down, more and more farmers have also participated in the cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials.

Zheng Qiang, a large planter in Saltam Village, Saltam Township, Habahe County, signed an order with Xinjiang Ehe Yaogu Biological Technology Co., Ltd. this year to plant 1,000 acres of longyuan sunflower and 1,000 acres of evening primrose. The company is responsible for providing the seeds. Seedlings, technology, and unified acquisition.

"In the past few years, I planted melons, oil sunflowers and other economic crops, with an average benefit of 500 to 600 yuan per mu. According to calculations, the average benefit of planting Chinese medicinal materials can be more than 1,000 yuan per mu. I plan to continue planting Chinese medicinal materials next year." Zheng Qiang said. .

According to Zhang Xueping, deputy head of Saltam Township, the villages used to grow silage corn, melons, oil sunflowers and other cash crops. Due to the large annual price fluctuations, the income of villagers is very unstable.

In 2019, the township began to adjust the industrial structure, planting 200 acres of Chinese medicinal material licorice, and subsidizing 300 yuan per acre.

"The effect of planting Chinese medicinal materials is better than one year. This year, the planting area of Chinese medicinal materials in the village has reached 30,000 mu, and there are 4 cooperative enterprises. In the next step, we will set up cooperatives in the form of land shares to further strengthen the production and marketing cooperation with enterprises. ."

  Integrating industries for innovation

At present, Xinjiang is constantly exploring the road of industrial integration and development of "Chinese medicinal materials +" centering on Chinese medicinal materials + deep processing, Chinese medicinal materials + tourism and health care.

In September this year, the Xinjiang Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Innovation Platform was established to provide strong technical support for the inheritance and innovation of Xinjiang Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ethnic Medicine.

There are also plans to build a number of Chinese medicinal materials research and development centers, and Chinese medicinal materials intensive processing centers in various parts of Xinjiang, which have greatly extended the Chinese medicinal materials industry chain.

The reporter walked into the quality control center of Xinjiang Rongcheng Harker Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., the director of the laboratory Wang Kaili was capturing the information of the test samples through the spectroscopy workstation.

"The main thing is to check whether the Chinese medicinal materials meet the standards prescribed by the Pharmacopoeia." Wang Kaili said.

According to Wang Jianjiang, deputy general manager of Xinjiang Rongcheng Harker Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., the quality control center has more than 100 sets of test equipment, which can complete all inspection tasks from raw medicinal materials to intermediate products to finished products, and meet the needs of enterprises in R&D and production. Items required for testing.

"The company is currently cooperating with the Kazakh hospital in Altay region to develop Kazakh medicines, and at the same time strengthening cooperation with scientific research institutes, upgrading and transforming the quality inspection and monitoring control center of Chinese herbal medicine, forming 6 scientific research results and obtaining 6 international and domestic invention patents." Wang Jian Jiang said.

In the eyes of Xu Xinwen, general manager of Yili Yaqina Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. in Qapqal County, how to "eat safflower thoroughly" is the focus of the company's next development.

Xu Xinwen introduced that the company currently has 8,860 acres of organic safflower planting base, mainly for the refining and processing of high-quality safflower seed oil, safflower silk sorting, drying, storage and sales.

Since 2018, the company's scientific research team has cooperated with universities to develop high-end blends of safflower seed oil. At the same time, it has jointly researched safflower planting techniques and standards with the Yili Agricultural Research Institute to improve the quality of safflower.

Many companies have chosen to strengthen cooperation with universities and research institutes for joint research and development.

Xinjiang Longhuiyuan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., the largest domestic licorice extract manufacturer located in the Emin sub-district of the Tacheng National Development and Open Experimental Zone, has entered into a strategic cooperation with Beijing Institute of Technology to obtain a national technology invention patent (liquorice preparation by biological enzymatic method).
