To facilitate a satisfactory connection to users, France intends to install optical fiber throughout the country by 2025. Directly benefiting from the support of the public authorities, the “Very high speed plan” is synonymous with hiring.

And a project of such magnitude requires resources, brains.

And arms.

A breeding ground for jobs

But what is optical fiber? This technology increases the speed and power of the Internet and telephone network. The aim is to provide users with very high speed internet (30 Mbit), including in rural and remote areas (which represent 43% of the population). In the business, the acronym FTTH (for

Fiber To The Home) is used

to refer to this area of expertise. It brings together three categories of positions: sales representatives (negotiators, account managers, etc.), study managers (designers, planners, picketers, who take samples from the field, so all those who work upstream to verify the feasibility of the project), and the “manuals”, in other words those who carry out the work on site (cable puller, fitter-fitter, etc.).

The technician is the most qualified, since he checks the fibers connected.

A man in the field - he spends 80% of his time there on average - this specialist must be mobile and have a team spirit.

It carries out the study, commissioning and maintenance work of the network.

Finally, he must be able to read documents in English as well as computer language (Windows, iOS or Linux) in order to fully master transmission and communication techniques.

The monthly salary is between 1,800 and 2,300 euros gross at the start of a career, depending on skills and specialties.

Quick trainings

There are two main state-recognized professional certificates that are directly related to fiber installation: Cable Communication Network Installer (IRCC) and Cable Communication Network Technician (TRCC).

To prepare these titles, accessible to holders of the bac, there are short apprenticeship training courses offered in particular by apprenticeship training centers (CFA). The advantage: this very operational one-year course allows apprentices to practice in the field, in a company or via technical platforms reproducing real conditions. For workers in professional reorientation, there are also rapid training courses ranging from a few weeks to a few months to prepare, for example, a professional qualification certificate of FTTH fitter-fitter. Do not hesitate to get information from Pôle emploi or the local mission in order to obtain funding for your course.

According to a study carried out within the framework of the “Fiber Optic” commitment for the development of employment and skills (EDEC) signed between the Ministry of Labor and various partners, the sector should generate 27,000 full-time equivalent recruitments. by 2023, at a rate of 7,000 hires per year, before increasing to around 4,000 per year from 2024.

The “smart home” professions

Once optical fiber is installed everywhere, what is the future for technicians?

In addition to the maintenance of facilities, the deployment of high-speed internet will generate new services, linked to connected objects (electrical, multimedia or robotic equipment in the home), which will in turn have to be installed, configured and to fix.

Since the end of 2017, a third certified title has also been recognized by the State: that of connected home service technician, which trains both in internet connection technologies, but also in the management of these new devices.
