• Four small meters of frontage, it is the right of terrace which escaped the bars of La Plaine.

  • In question, a recommendation of the marine firefighters who wish to have a reserved access road on the Place de la Plaine, strongly encroaching on the current terraces.

  • A compromise was found with the traders.

Four small meters and then that's it? The bars, snacks and restaurants of the Place de la Plaine have not gone far from seeing the surface of their terrace drastically reduced. This four-meter limit comes from a recommendation from the Marseille firefighters who are worried, without it, of not being able to deploy a large ladder to access the floors of buildings in case of fire or necessity.

"Before the renovation work on the square, the Soléam [the development company which carried out the work and operates on behalf of the metropolis] had promised us our current surface area", notes Hazim El Moukaddem, president of the association merchants from La Plaine.

Yes but, here it is, it had also promised the marine firefighters an access route during the discussions started in 2016, jointly with the former municipality, on the renovation of the place.

"We are getting the baby back.

Perhaps Soléam made promises that it knew it could not keep, ”wonders Roland Cazzola, municipal councilor responsible for public space.

"It's like with the fairgrounds, where Soléam signed an act in the prefecture committing to reinstate them all knowing that there would only be 185 locations for 250 stalls", assures the elected official.

Quickly movable furniture

However, the municipality of Marseille seems to have reached a compromise between the marine firefighters and the limonadiers of the place who should keep their terraces.

“Beyond four meters, coffee makers will install light, plastic furniture that can be easily and quickly moved if necessary.

No parasols with weighted feet, for example.

Also, training in the immediate removal of furniture will be organized every three or four months, ”explains Rolland Cazzola.

"Checks and tests will be carried out to ensure that the bars play the game ... On the other hand, the least that misses ...", he warns.

To ensure this pressure, concession contracts will be renewed every six months and not every three years, as is customary.

Enough to satisfy the tenants who, without that, were preparing to greatly reduce the sails.

“It was simple.

We did the math: from 20 to 30 tables on average at each of the ten establishments in the area, we went down to three or four.

Suffice to say that under these conditions, the manager alone can run his bar alone, and too bad for the 60 jobs in the various establishments, ”summarizes Hazem El Moukaddem.

Another element taken into consideration and noted both by the elected official and by Hazem El Moukaddem is the management of security on the square, provided in part by the bars themselves which collectively employ four to eight guards, depending on the evening. .

“We know that he resolves a lot of conflicts,” admits Rolland Cazzola.

A detail that matters.
