On November 23, Sun Haoqin, deputy director of the Seed Management Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, stated at the press conference that the national crop germplasm bank was built at the Institute of Crop Science of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Construction of the new bank began in February 2019. It was completed and put into trial operation in September.
The new library has three characteristics: First, it has a large capacity, with a total capacity of 1.5 million copies. The preservation capacity ranks first in the world at present, and can meet the requirements for the safe preservation, identification and excavation of crop germplasm resources in the country in the next 50 years, as well as the cultivation of new varieties. Significant demand; the second is the complete preservation method, which basically realizes the low-temperature and ultra-low temperature preservation of seeds, and can also preserve the test tube seedlings and DNA, covering all the preservation methods of plant germplasm resources in the world; the third is the advanced technology, and the preservation technology reaches or exceeds According to the standards of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the whole preservation process has realized intelligence and information, and the seed storage life can reach 50 years, surpassing developed countries such as Europe and the United States.
