China News Agency, Beijing, November 23 (Reporter Chen Su) The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China stated on the 23rd that since March this year, China has launched the largest survey of agricultural germplasm resources in the history of New China, and the current survey has made phased progress. , Some endangered resources have been re-discovered.

At the press conference of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs held that day, Sun Haoqin, deputy director of the Seed Industry Management Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, said that agricultural germplasm resources are national strategic resources.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, China has organized two national collections of crops and livestock and poultry germplasm resources. More than 30 years and more than 10 years have passed since then.

In fact, agricultural germplasm resources are always undergoing dynamic changes regardless of the number of types and regional distribution. In particular, industrialization, urbanization and climate change have exacerbated the risk of resource loss.

"Under the new situation, conducting a nationwide survey of agricultural germplasm resources, speeding up the identification of resources, implementing rescue collection and protection, and discovering a number of excellent new resources have become an important part of achieving scientific and technological self-reliance, self-reliance, and control of seed resources in the seed industry. The urgent task is of great significance to fighting a turnaround in the seed industry and promoting the revitalization of the seed industry." Sun Haoqin said.

In order to protect the germplasm resources and realize the revitalization of the seed industry, China has launched the largest survey of agricultural germplasm resources in the history of New China. From this year, it will take three years to complete the comprehensive survey of crops, livestock and aquatic resources. Collect and protect a batch of rare, endangered, and unique resources in a rescue manner, including the types, quantity, distribution, and characteristics of resources, so as to realize the collection of all receivables and the preservation of all those that should be insured.

Sun Haoqin said that up to now, the census and collection of crop germplasm resources have been completed in a total of 2,323 counties. The administrative village census coverage rate of livestock and poultry has reached 97.6%, and the census coverage rate of aquatic products has exceeded 95%. Effectiveness.

"Through the census, a large number of new resources have been discovered and a number of rare resources have been rescued and protected." Sun Haoqin said that 20,800 crop germplasm resources were newly collected, 18 livestock and poultry genetic resources were newly discovered, and aquaculture germplasm resources were newly collected. There are more than 30,000 copies. Some of these resources are old, some are rare and endangered, and some carry farming civilization and traditional culture, especially filling the gaps in the general survey of livestock and poultry genetic resources on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

At the same time, 50,000 pieces of genetic material from six major livestock species including pigs, horses, cattle, sheep, deer, and camels were newly collected. Endangered species such as Zhongshan duck and Shanghai buffalo were rediscovered and properly protected in this census.

According to reports, important progress has been made in the construction of national germplasm banks such as the National Crop Germplasm Bank, the National Livestock and Poultry Germplasm Bank, and the National Marine Fishery Biological Germplasm Bank.

Relevant work on the upgrading and transformation of the National Agricultural Microbial Germplasm Resource Bank has also begun.
