Make your exhaust roar, but without the inconvenience?
This is the equation that Porsche wants to solve with its new models of electric cars.
According to the specialized site CarBuzz, the car manufacturer was working on the creation of a kind of fictitious exhaust designed to recreate the sound emitted by a classic car.
The company regrets that the background noise generated by electric motors is “emotionless” and “dominated by the rolling noise of tires”.
Concretely, this noise simulator would look a lot like the rear axle exhaust box of a traditional car and would be made from normal exhaust material, presumably stainless steel.
Objective: to make the false sound as close as possible to that of a real combustion engine.
Rediscover the emotion
With this system acting as a sound amplifier, Porsche wants to rediscover the "emotional character" of a classic car, but still having the advantages of electric.
If there is already an option called "Electric Sport Sound", billed a little over 500 euros and aimed at improving and amplifying the sound emitted by the car, this system does not fully satisfy the manufacturer.
Hence the idea of filing this patent.
However, this innovation could come up against the legislation in force relating to the noise of motor vehicles, as Numerama reminds us.
A decree dated May 12, 2021 provides for the implementation of a plan to reduce the number of decibels on the roads.
