• After the festival of cancellations of events at the time of the health crisis, the congresses returned and are maintained in Cannes.

  • Good news for the sector?

The answers are qualified after “having had a good summer” but the fear of “not having enough to get through the winter”, on the side of hoteliers.

  • The representatives of Cannes hoteliers and restaurateurs make the same conclusions, maintaining the congresses is a good thing but it is limited by the health protocol and the lack of international clients, which are part of the city's DNA.

The Mipim, the Cannes Lions or the Film Festival, with the health crisis, seventeen major events had been canceled in Cannes. A blow for the city of festivals which amounted to 800 million euros the shortfall during this period. Despite a "very good summer" and the prospects for this end of the year filled with congresses, the players in the local economy remain cautious before celebrating a possible "recovery".

"We had a yachting show that took place in September with figures equivalent to 2019 but with the reprogramming of Tax Free at the end of October, we lost 21 points in occupancy rate over the whole month", exclaims Christine Welter, president of the hoteliers union in Cannes and the Cannes basin.

She adds: “We have good signals, as for the luxury tourism fair, which will take place for three days in early December, for which we are fully booked.

We remain hopeful, but above all we want the hotels to remain open and that we find a course of just a normal year in 2022 ”.

"The Covid-19 parenthesis is not yet closed"

The president of the hoteliers union adds: "We have had three good months since the resumption but one season, in our sector, is six months and to last the rest of the year, they must have been very good. ". She recognizes the efforts made to ensure that events take place but points to “the gauges reduced by health protocol” which necessarily reduce the potential number of clients. “The good thing is that the conventions are taking place. The very positive thing is that the people who make the trip are very happy to have come because the real return of the internationals is still missing. We are therefore still below the occupancy rates for 2019. ”

“There is not much to say as long as the air flow has not resumed normally, supports Alain Lahouti, president of the UMIH 06 HCR Cannes Restaurateurs.

Admittedly, last year, at the same time, we were all closed with no potential reopening date.

But today, the Covid-19 parenthesis is not yet closed.

"He shares the opinion of the president of the hotel union," the economic plan of the city means that we need these conventions to pay the winter rents.

It is vital that things restart.

"

The Cannes town hall assures us that “more than 30 professional events are already confirmed” for next year.
