Yesterday, Edge Group signed a strategic agreement with Israel Aerospace Industries to jointly design a series of best-in-class unmanned, adjustable ships of the 170-M class that can be used for the full range of military and commercial applications.

Edge said in a statement that it is benefiting from its subsidiary Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding Company, in the design, construction, repair, maintenance, renewal and conversion of marine and commercial vessels, to cooperate with the Israel Defense Industries Company, with the aim of developing advanced unmanned ships.

She added that while the Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding Company will design the platform, and work on integrating control and payload systems and developing the operational concept, the Israeli company will develop the independent control system, and integrate the different mission payloads into the control system units according to the requirements of those tasks.

The unmanned ship consists of advanced sensors, sonar and imaging systems integrated into a unified command and control system, and can operate either remotely, semi-autonomously, or completely autonomously, without the need for any human intervention.

The vessel is custom-designed to suit all customer requirements and will offer unique capabilities in terms of scalability, payload, range, maneuverability and performance.

"This agreement constitutes an important achievement for Edge, as we are cooperating with major players in the defense sector, such as Israel Aerospace Industries, to enhance our advanced technology portfolio," said Faisal Al-Bannai, CEO and Managing Director of the Edge Group.

For his part, President and CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries, Boaz Levy, said, “The agreement combines the best of technological know-how in both companies, represented by the expertise of the maritime and commercial vessels of the Edge Group and Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding Company, and the expertise of Israel Aerospace Industries in the field of Autonomous systems, (robots) and artificial intelligence, to provide a joint effort made in the UAE, which increases the opportunities and growth of the two companies’ businesses.”
