A major coffee chain will start a new demonstration experiment to reduce plastic waste.

The idea is to provide take-out drinks in cups that can be used repeatedly and check the effects such as the amount of garbage reduction.

"Starbucks Coffee Japan" will start the demonstration experiment from 22nd at some stores in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

On the 17th, the situation was released to the press.

In the experiment, the takeaway drink container will be switched from the traditional disposable to a stainless steel cup.

When ordering a drink, the desired customer tells the clerk, reads the special code on the smartphone, and registers that the cup has been borrowed.

They will be returned to the store within 3 days of receipt, and the partner company will wash the cup and use it repeatedly.

The use of the cup is free for the time being, and the demonstration experiment will be continued until May next year to confirm the effect such as the amount of waste reduction.

Rei Fukawa, the team manager in charge, said, "I would like to consider full-scale operation while observing the usage status of customers."

In Japan, Aeon, a major distributor, and food manufacturers are also promoting the introduction of containers that can be used repeatedly, and there is a growing movement to reduce waste such as plastic waste.
