In December 2019, audiovisual media executives signed a charter guaranteeing more visibility for people with disabilities on their channels. These commitments, which want to "give the floor to people with disabilities to talk about something other than disability" or "present disability in a positive way [...], not just compassionate", were a reaction to the too low rate of representation of people. people with disabilities on screen and on the air: 0.7% (CSA 2018). And since ? "In 2020, only 0.6% of the total of individuals indexed in the audiovisual sector is perceived as having a disability", notes the new barometer of the representation of the CSA, which specifies that only visible disabilities (motor, mental and psychological , visual and auditory, dwarfism, trisomy) are counted.
“Our athletes are carriers of unique life paths.
»Jean Minier, of the Paralympic Committee
There is no doubt that the figure to come for the year 2021 should explode the counters.
Two-word explanation: Paralympic Games.
The exceptional coverage of these Games (eight hours of live broadcast per day on France Télévisions, a daily magazine on L'Équipe TV), which took place from August 24 to September 5, 2021, in Tokyo (Japan), is not for displease Jean Minier, representative of the French Paralympic Committee.
For him, the Olympics "are a fantastic opportunity to show to what extent our athletes are bearers of a word, of singular life paths".
"We have the impression of great progress"
The 54 medals obtained by the French delegation have, he believes, necessarily accentuated this phenomenon of exposure. “The French media had completely failed in 2012 in London. There is a catching-up effect and since then, during the Games period, we have the impression of great progress. »One impression only, because the actors of Paralympic sport regret that the closing ceremony tirelessly involves the diving in the anonymity of hundreds of disabled athletes, and of the handicap itself. “It's the sidereal void, reacts Jean Minier. Our challenge now is to manage to maintain this media interest until Paris 2024. We must continue to communicate widely about our athletes. "
Supported by the international movement WeThe15, born during these Games and which aims to make it known that disability is shared by 15% of the world population, the Paralympic Committee is aware that sport on TV can do a lot for disability.
"If the Games can improve the visibility of all disabilities on the screen, then it must be fully valued", launches Jean Minier.
The CSA 2022 barometer will give a first trend.
