A concrete plan of a new system to be established by the government to secure the domestic production capacity of semiconductors for the establishment of economic security has been clarified.

It is said that it will subsidize half of the cost of factory maintenance to businesses on the condition that it will respond to increased production when the supply and demand of semiconductors is tight.

As the economies of each country recover from the effects of the new coronavirus, there is a global shortage of semiconductors, forcing automakers to cut production in Japan as well.

Under these circumstances, the government has a policy of establishing a fund to secure the domestic production capacity of semiconductors for the establishment of economic security, and a concrete plan of the new system has been clarified.

According to this, in addition to continuous production and investment after the semiconductor production company has set up a factory, when the supply and demand of semiconductors is tight, it is necessary to connect to a stable supply according to the increase in production. In addition, half of the cost of factory maintenance will be subsidized through the fund.

The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry discusses the plan submitted by the business operator with the relevant ministries and agencies and certifies it. If the contents of the certification are violated, the policy is to request the refund of the subsidy.

Regarding semiconductors, TSMC, the world's largest contract manufacturer in Taiwan, announced last month that it would build a new factory in Japan.

It is said that this system will be established based on these movements, but it will be asked whether the effect can be achieved in proportion to the budget amount of hundreds of billions of yen.
