The CDU politician is a familiar face at the head of the city council.

It will be his second term as he was president from January 2018 to June 2019.

He is currently the vice-president of Burkhard Jung (SPD), who is the mayor of Leipzig.

Lewe, who holds a degree in administration, has been a member of the Presidium of the City Council since 2013.

The 56-year-old local politician has been mayor of Münster since 2009.

The married father of five children won the direct election in his hometown for the third time in autumn 2020.

The Leipziger Jung gives up the office at the head of the City Council according to schedule. The former teacher is expected to be proposed as vice-president by the SPD group in the city council. He has been President of the City Council since June 2019, previously he was one of the deputies. Just a few weeks ago, with a view to the approaching winter, he called “now quickly” for a 2-G regulation, for example in hospitals, nursing homes and schools. "It also makes sense if only those who have been vaccinated and recovered can visit clubs, theaters, cinemas and fitness studios." For such rules, a national framework is still necessary, he warned. He repeatedly advocated a clear stance against brutalization of the debates and warned against hatred and agitation.

Jung is married and also has five children.

Other deputy presidents are Greens, non-party and leftists.

This reflects the non-partisan nature of the municipal umbrella association.

The motto of the Annual General Meeting this year is “What makes life so special.

The cities in Germany ”.

About 800 delegates and guests are expected.

The main speaker is Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) is also expected to speak in Erfurt.
