Chinanews.com client, Beijing, October 29 (Reporter Xie Yiguan) The "a handful of vegetables for more than ten yuan" has not yet ended, and the price of eggs has risen.

This is the off-season of demand, why did eggs start to rise?

Is "Rocket Egg" going to make a comeback?

Egg prices rose by more than 20% in half a month

On October 28, at a vegetable market in Xicheng District, Beijing, a reporter from Chinanews.com noticed that fresh eggs were priced at 6.3 yuan a catty, and there were signs of revision on the price tag.

"The price of eggs has increased a lot in the last two days, and it hasn't risen today." The vendor said, "The purchase price of eggs has been high recently."

In another supermarket in Xicheng District, the price of bulk eggs was 5.98 yuan per catty.

"A week ago, the price seemed to be 5.38 yuan per catty, which increased by 60 cents in a short period of time." said a resident.

When did this wave of egg price rises begin?

"Egg prices continued to fall in September at the beginning of the month, dropping to a minimum of 4.06 yuan per catty, and some low-price areas even fell below the 4 yuan mark. But since October 10, egg prices have started to rise." Zhuo Chuang Information Analyst Liu Mei told reporters that as of October 26, the average price of eggs in the main producing areas nationwide had risen to 5.13 yuan per catty, which was higher than the high point before the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the increase reached 26.35% in only half a month.

According to the monitoring of the "National Agricultural Products Wholesale Market Price Information System" of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, from October 15 to 22, the price of eggs was 9.74 yuan/kg, a month-on-month increase of 1.8% and a year-on-year increase of 22.0%.

This means that the price of eggs is more than 20% more expensive than the same period last year.

Why is the price of eggs rising rapidly?

"From the supply side, the stock of laying hens has always been at a low level this year, and in September it dropped to a new low during the year. The supply of eggs was limited, coupled with the poor replenishment of chicks in June, and new production began in October. The decrease in the number of laying hens has further aggravated the tight supply situation." Liu Mei pointed out.

According to the monitoring data of Zhuo Chuang Information, the number of laying hens in the country in September was about 1.164 billion, a decrease of 0.98% month-on-month and 8.59% year-on-year, which was the lowest level in the past five years.

“In addition, because October is the traditional off-season for egg sales, and the price of eggs continued to fall in September, in order to avoid risks, all links are mainly to maintain low inventory.” Liu Mei said that after the price of eggs rises, it will be affected by “buy, not buy”. Under the influence of “decline” sentiment, the enthusiasm for downstream purchases has increased rapidly, the amount of purchases entering the market has increased, the supply of goods in production areas is tight, and the phenomenon of rushing goods in many places has promoted the rise of egg prices.

On the demand side, in Liu Mei’s view, the decline in vegetable production in the north due to the continuous rainfall and rapid cooling in the early period has caused a significant increase in vegetable prices, which is an important factor that stimulates egg consumption and stimulates egg prices to rise this month.

Pork prices are also rebounding at low prices, but the current prices are still not high, which has limited boost to egg prices.

In the above-mentioned supermarkets, the reporter also noticed that vegetable prices remained high. The price tag indicated that "water spinach was 11.98 yuan per catty, lettuce was 9.98 yuan per catty, and shallots and lentils were 8.98 yuan per catty."

Egg prices

may continue to rise in the

short term

Now that the retail price of eggs has exceeded 6 yuan per catty, will the price of eggs continue to rise in the later period?

When will it fall back?

"At present, the price of eggs has risen to a staged high, and downstream dealers have become cautious about high-price purchases. Eggs in many places have stopped rising and stabilized." Liu Mei said, but the current inventory in each link is still low, and the prices of related substitutes are still low. The downward trend has not yet appeared, and the demand for eggs is still strong. The price of eggs may not easily fall in the short term, and it is not ruled out that there is still a rising trend.

It is worth mentioning that at the end of October 2019, the price of eggs rose to a high level, but dropped rapidly in November.

Is this still the case this year?

"The stock of layer hens this year is significantly lower than the level of the same period in 2019, and the high feed price has formed a bottom support for the price of eggs. Later, as vegetables are launched, vegetable prices may fall, and there is also a risk of lower egg prices, but the decline may be limited. "
