Airbus conducts a test flight using 100% biofuel

European aircraft maker Airbus has tested an aircraft that is fully fueled with sustainable fuel.

The group said on Friday that the A319neo test plane had taken off the previous day in the Toulouse region, using sustainable aviation fuel (SAV).

SAF is mainly produced from biomass such as unused herbal plants and cooking oils.

Such biofuels can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but are currently significantly more expensive than regular fuels.

Airbus is cooperating on the project with the Safran Technology Group, the aircraft manufacturer Dassault, the French Aerospace Research Center (ONERA) and the French Ministry of Transport.

Airbus expects to publish flight and ground test results using 100% biofuels next year.

And in May, Air France flew a long-distance flight for the first time with a sustainable blend of fuels made from French-produced cooking oil.
