• The Stellantis plant in Rennes will produce a new car.

  • It will be the CR3, which will replace the current Citroën C5 Aircross and will be available in three models, including an electric one.

  • Thanks to an investment of 152 million euros, the Rennes plant will also review its industrial facilities to make it less energy-intensive.

It is celebrating its 60th birthday this year. In Rennes, the La Janais factory is part of the furniture. Since its inauguration in 1961 by General de Gaulle, the site has seen models of cars pass, from the Citroën Ami 6 to the BX via the Xsara or the Peugeot 508. The Stellantis factory (ex-PSA) in Rennes currently manufactures the Citroën C5 Aircross and shares the production of the Peugeot 5008 with the Sochaux (Doubs) site. It is preparing to take a new turn today with the announcement on Tuesday of the arrival of a new vehicle on its production lines.

It will be the CR3, which will take over from the C5 Aircross by 2024 or 2025 with production forecasts of “100,000 vehicles each year”, according to Etienne Martin-Commandeur, director of the site.

It will be offered in a thermal, hybrid but above all electric model with "a range of 700 km," says the director.

An investment of 152 million euros for the plant

Very ambitious, like many of its competitors, in the electricity market, the Stellantis group will invest 152 million euros to transform the Rennes plant, which will be equipped with a new "multi-energy" platform, capable of produce both electric and hybrid vehicles, and a battery assembly workshop.

While the plant has been idling for several months due to a shortage of semiconductors, the announcement rejoices the unions.

This project "consolidates the industrial future and employment at the group's Breton plant and makes it one of those which will contribute to the energy transition in which the automotive industry is engaged," said the CFE-CGC in a press release. .

A goal of carbon neutrality by 2030

Following the objective set by the Stellantis group of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 in all its factories, La Janais will also adapt its industrial facilities to make it less energy-intensive.

The upcoming installation of a biomass boiler and a heating network for hot water should allow it "to reduce its CO2 emissions by 6,600 tonnes per year", according to Etienne Martin-Commandeur.

A commitment welcomed by the mayor (PS) of Rennes.

"Fighting against global warming is not an option, it is an imperative, and everything must be done to accelerate this transition and achieve this neutrality", said Nathalie Appéré, hoping that in the future the plant of The Janais “is as rich in jobs as it is poor in carbon emissions”.
