His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated yesterday the sixth annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which is chaired by the UAE, and will be held this year virtually, over three days, with the participation of 103 Countries that are members of the Bank and strategic partners.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid delivered the keynote speech for the meeting, in which he welcomed the members and attendees, stressing that the meeting represents a platform for communication and strengthening partnership and economic cooperation between countries.

His Highness told the participants: "We welcome and meet you in conjunction with the activities of (Expo 2020 Dubai), where the world gathers here in the UAE... Everyone is celebrating with us the fiftieth year of our country... and we celebrate with you all the partnership and global economic cooperation... We are keen on the success of this meeting, And that it will have tangible results for the people to benefit from. We wish the Bank’s meetings in the UAE every success.”

In the first hosting of the meeting of the Board of Governors in the Middle East, representatives of the member countries of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank are discussing ways to accelerate sustainable development, under the slogan “We invest today for a bright future.”

Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Governor of the UAE at the Bank and Chairman of the Board of Governors, delivered a speech in which he welcomed the participants, in which he said: “In conjunction with our preparations to celebrate the golden jubilee of the UAE, and with (Expo 2020 Dubai), we look with pride at all the achievements achieved by the state, and we look forward with determination and confidence to consolidate its position at the forefront of developed countries around the world, and as one of the founding members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the UAE is proud to support the strategic objectives of the bank, which is to contribute to the advancement of all Asian countries, so that it can occupy prominent ranks among the Countries of the world".

He added: "We are working in the UAE to provide new opportunities in various areas of sustainable development, and we focus on keeping pace with the transformation in the energy sector, building a knowledge economy, and developing the industrial sector, in line with the (Fifty Principles), which is the strategic road map for the next stage of the development process. In addition to launching pioneering initiatives such as the strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.”

Al-Jaber stressed that these initiatives confirm the common vision with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which has the same commitment to sustainability and economic development, which is evident in the strategic goal he announced in 2020, which is to allocate 50% of its total financing, until 2025, for climate-friendly projects.

After the opening ceremony, the Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and Deputy Governor of the UAE at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Mohammed Saif Al-Suwaidi, spoke during the round table discussions, under the title "Financing Climate Projects", where he focused on the importance of international cooperation, partnerships and continuous dialogue, to bridge climate change. He said that the growing momentum of investment in green infrastructure is a very important issue for the future, pointing out that the discussions of the meeting are very vital, if we want to stimulate investments in infrastructure that support global efforts to deal with climate issues.

Two seminars in Abu Dhabi

In parallel with the activities of the bank's virtual annual meeting, the UAE is organizing two seminars in person in Abu Dhabi, focusing in particular on the UAE and the Middle East.

Participants from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, speakers from the UAE government and industry experts, will present their vision and opinions on the region to the meeting participants from all over the world.

The first symposium, entitled “How innovative financing can bridge the infrastructure spending gap in the Middle East”, will be held on October 27 at the Abu Dhabi Global Market headquarters on Al Maryah Island.

As for the second symposium, it will be held under the title "How the UAE supports climate-resilient infrastructure in the Middle East", on October 28, at the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Masdar City.
