(Food Security Reporter Wan Lixing) Red sorghum by the Hongze Lake has a good harvest. Diversified autumn grain planting helps farmers increase income

China News Service, Suqian, October 17th (Reporter Liu Lin) In the golden autumn of October, Hexiang is intoxicating.

On the 17th, thousands of acres of sorghum in Tiangang Lake Township, Sihong, Jiangsu received a good harvest. In the red sorghum sea, harvesters lined up and the machines roared, and the growers were smiling.

Sihong County is located in the northwest of Jiangsu Province, in the south of Suqian City, in the middle reaches of the Huai River and east of Hongze Lake.

Sihong County is a well-known hometown of fish and rice in Jiangsu. A variety of agricultural products have been approved for agricultural product geographical indication certification and won the title of "Chinese Crab Hometown" and "China Pecan Hometown" in the Golden Agriculture Award.

"I used to drive a harvester. When the farming season is busy, I drive the harvester to go north and south to help others harvest crops." Xu Lei, a big sorghum grower, is busy bagging sorghum. He told reporters that the sorghum will be dried soon, and then it will be dried. Will be pulled away by the ordered winery.

"This year's price of sorghum is about 4 yuan per kilogram, and the yield per mu is over 600 kilograms, and the net profit per mu is more than 1,000 yuan."

Xu Lei said that the reason for planting sorghum was because he harvested sorghum in other places a few years ago. Seeing that the benefits of planting sorghum in other places are very good, he tried to plant some of them last year. After experiencing the sweetness, the planting area expanded to more than 1,000 mu this year. The net profit is nearly 1 million yuan.

Xu Lei is a native of Tianganghu Township, Sihong County, just 33 years old.

"In the past,'scraping' in the soil can only fill your stomach, so the elderly are farming, and the young are working outside. Now the profits of large-scale planting are considerable, and the mechanized large-scale planting is more suitable for young people."

In front of Xu Lei, thousands of acres of sorghum "red sea" undulated with the wind, full of grain ears, under the shining of the setting sun, the faces of the growers were reddened.

In the sorghum field, several harvesters shuttled back and forth, cutting, threshing, drying and other processes in one go. Many farmers were soaked in sweat with their clothes, but the joy on their faces could not be blocked.

In recent years, the cultivation of red sorghum has sprung up, and the planting area of Sihong County has been continuously expanded.

"Sorghum is full of treasures. In addition to sorghum rice that can be used for brewing and eating, sorghum stalks are also very useful. So many sorghum stalks in my family have also been ordered by a feed factory. After the sorghum is harvested, all the sorghum stalks are transported away. "Xu Lei said with a smile.

It is understood that sorghum is sown after the wheat is harvested in early June, and can be harvested in early and mid-October.

The sorghum harvest is over, just in time for the wheat planting. This "non-stubble" wheat and sorghum rotation has greatly improved the utilization rate of arable land.

Ma Fei, a second-level agricultural officer in charge of agriculture in Tianganghu Township, Sihong County, told reporters that the township has more than 70,000 mu of arable land. Under the guidance and assistance of the government, rice, corn, soybeans, and sweet potatoes are planted.

"Especially in recent years, the planting of red sorghum has sprung up, and the planting area has continued to expand."

Ma Fei analyzed that the red sorghum planting technology is simple, the management is relatively easy, the yield is high, and the price is high. Once farmers try it, they will actively expand the planting area.

"In the 1970s and 1980s, sorghum was grown as edible grain, but was gradually eliminated due to its rough taste. Now the Sihong wine industry is developed, and the market demand for sorghum is very large. This year's thousands of acres of sorghum have long been used by the winery. It has been booked, and now many large growers have signed land transfer contracts in the villages, preparing to grow sorghum on a large scale."

According to Zhang Cheng, director of the Agricultural Technology Center of Sihong County, Sihong County is adjacent to Hongze Lake, with abundant water resources, fertile land, typical yellow clay, rich in potassium, selenium and other trace elements, and the agricultural products produced are of good quality and high price. .

According to local conditions, the Agricultural Technology Center vigorously promotes the cultivation of high-quality rice in water-rich areas, and promotes the cultivation of economic crops such as corn, sweet potatoes, and peanuts in hilly areas such as the Southwest Hill.

"The sorghum planting area accounts for a small proportion of the total cultivated land in Sihong, but the scale is constantly expanding. We have cooperated with many universities to provide technical support. The diversification of agricultural product varieties can help improve farmers’ ability to withstand risks. Increase revenue."

It is understood that the county’s total grain planting area in 2021 will reach more than 2.722 million mu. At present, the county has harvested 1.41 million mu of wheat, with a yield of 397 kg per mu, and a total output of 560,000 tons, an increase of 3.45 over the previous year (525,500 tons). 10,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.16%.

The main autumn grain planting area this year is 1.5684 million mu, of which 99,700 mu of rice, 422,500 mu of corn, 61,600 mu of soybean, 38,300 mu of sweet potato, and 46,300 mu of peanut.
