The Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the UAE, during its last meeting, was briefed on the latest developments in the four units of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.

A statement issued yesterday stated that the discussion touched on the latest developments related to the authority’s control and inspection program in “Unit 1” and “Unit 2” of the Barakah station, in addition to reviewing the various stages of tests for “Unit 2”, which was recently linked to the national network for the production of electricity.

The authority's resident inspectors at the station carry out inspections around the clock, in addition to sending additional inspectors to the authority to verify compliance of all stages with the authority's regulatory requirements.

The members of the Council also discussed the strategy of orphan radioactive sources for the period from 2021 to 2026, which sets the foundations for establishing national arrangements for the protection of radiation from radioactive sources, which fall outside the regulatory scope and are known as “orphan radioactive sources.”

In the field of international cooperation for research and studies, the Board of Directors approved an agreement between the authority and the French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety, to renew cooperation in various technical fields.

This collaboration includes the research project to study patterns of radioisotope movement in the local environment.

It is noteworthy that the UAE is preparing to host the “Convex-3” international exercise, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and will be held in the UAE under the title “Barakah Al Emarat” from 26 to 27 October, with the participation of 170 countries and international organizations in the exercise.
