The British engine manufacturer has landed a major order from the US Air Force.

The Air Force is ordering F-130 engines from Rolls Royce worth up to $ 2.6 billion, the company said.

These are to be used as replacement engines for the B-52 Stratofortress bombers.

Rolls-Royce manager Craig McVay described the order as a great success.

The F-130 engine will offer "considerably higher" fuel efficiency and should enable the bombers to remain in service until the 2050s.

Rolls Royce prevailed in the competition against the established supplier Pratt & Whitney, which belongs to the American arms company Raytheon.

The large order is well received on the stock exchange.

Rolls Royce shares rose more than 5 percent this morning to a year and a half high.
