Shanxi is a semi-arid area in China. In the past, large areas of barren hillsides were abandoned due to low crop yields.

A few years ago, through technological improvement, high-quality millet was planted here, the yield per mu has increased from 200-300 jin to about 500 jin, and the planting area has expanded from 5,000 to 6,000 acres in the past to more than 80,000 acres now.

This year, there has been a new breakthrough in millet planting here. Let's take a look.

In Shanyin County's 10,000-mu organic dry farming millet production base, the yellow and green colors are alternated. The spring millet sown in April this year is not yet fully mature, while the winter millet test field sown in November last year is already golden.

According to reports, the spring millet currently mainly planted in Shanyin County is sown in April each year, and generally matures in early October. However, the local autumn frost comes earlier, and the millet often has a 50% chance of being attacked by autumn frost, resulting in a decrease in yield.

The winter millet that was successfully sown in this experiment was sown in November every year, and sprouted in the soil in winter. The next spring will emerge more than 20 days earlier than the spring millet. The maturity period can also be more than half a month earlier, and it can be harvested before the autumn frost.

Not only can it avoid the reduction in yield caused by frost, but because of the long growing period, the quality of millet is better than that of spring sown millet.

In recent years, the local government has adopted policy support, special subsidies, technological innovation and other measures to build county-level public brands and boost the sales of agricultural special products. Xiaomi alone has increased the average household income by more than 4,700 yuan.

Shuozhou Shanyin County Party Secretary Wang Shijie: In the

next step, we will continue to increase policy support, promote the application of new organic dry farming technologies, and at the same time extend the industrial chain and increase the added value of agricultural products.
