Vodafone Spain is going through a new ERE, this one for 515 workers in its commercial area.

The operator has already added four employment regulation files since 2013 and eight if the analysis dates back to the beginning of the century, according to data collected by EL MUNDO.

"We cannot say that it is a surprise because the chain always breaks in the same place," they consider in the STC union, asked about it by this newspaper.

The measure represents an "attempt by the company to try to hide a performance from its leaders", in the words of UGT, the majority union within the

red

operator

.

Vodafone Spain has suffered ERE

in 2002, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2019 and now in 2021

.

"The rate at which we are accustomed is two per year," recalls a former employee of the company.

These processes would also have to add different periods of early retirement and outsourcing.

Since 2013, there have been practically 3,600 departures;

since the beginning of the century, the count would already exceed 6,200.

The company currently has 4,285 employees despite the fact that after the purchase of ONO it brought together a workforce of around 6,000 professionals.

The 515 of the new ERE would represent 12% of the current Vodafone Spain workforce, which has as CEO the Irishman Colman Deegan since last November 1, replacing the Portuguese António Coimbra.

Vodafone's explanation for the adjustment is not alien to anyone who is part of the telecommunications sector, affected by some deflation in a scenario dominated by

low cost

: "For some years, the competitive intensity in prices and the drift towards low-value rates in Spain have caused a sharp drop in revenues and a significant deterioration in margins, "the company explained in a statement.

In Orange Spain, for example, an ERE was announced in May "for organizational reasons"

for a maximum of 485 workers, around 15% of the company Orange Espagne SAU, one of those that make up the

orange

operator

, with 7,700 employees in total in the country.

The drip (or bleeding) is constant for the sector.

For Telefónica, the leader in the

telco

area

, the adjustments have been made mainly through retirement and early retirement plans

.

The last voluntary termination plan, in 2019, achieved 2,636 adhesions.

Only in this company, the exits exceed 40,000 since 2000. If all the losses of the three major operators (Telefónica itself, Orange and Vodafone) were put together, the barrier of 50,000 would be clearly exceeded.

In full competition with other companies, such as the digital giants generally coming from the US (Google or Facebook for example), the telecommunications sector is distinguished throughout Europe as clearly deflationary: its prices are reduced, with the

low cost

per flag, while the CPI follows an upward trend.

Living, in general, costs more as time goes by, but not using telephone services.
