France is lagging behind on the remuneration of teachers.

According to the annual report “Regards sur education” published Thursday by the OECD, the salaries of French teachers with 15 years of experience have stagnated or increased by only 1% between 2010 and 2020 in elementary and secondary education.

This is well below the increase of 6 to 7% recorded on average among members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, which brings together some 40 developed countries.

However, a catch-up was made from 2015, with an increase of 4 percentage points in the statutory salary over the period 2015-2020, following a drop of 3 or 4 points depending on the level between 2010 and 2015. “It There is a slight increase, but the deviations are still significant compared to the average for OECD countries (…) So it is an element of reflection ”, explained Eric Charbonnier, education expert at the OECD, during 'a press conference.

The inequalities of the French education system aggravated by the pandemic

The OECD indicates that salary progression is slow at the start of a career and that teachers in the middle of their career are "particularly disadvantaged".

At the start of the 2019 school year, the salary of elementary and secondary teachers in France after 10 or 15 years of service was therefore at least 15% lower than the average for OECD countries.

However, the gap narrows at the end of the course, since French salaries at the end of their career are 76% higher than at the start, against 66% for the OECD average.

For Eric Charbonnier, beyond the salary issue, it is also necessary "to have a global reflection on the teaching profession", because "the well-being of teachers is also an important element".

The OECD also stresses the need to tackle persistent inequalities in the French education system, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The pandemic has highlighted the importance of equity in education, which was already lacking in this area," said OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann, while welcoming "the performance of France, which to limit as much as possible the interruptions of face-to-face teaching ”.
