Once out of fashion, cargo bikes have made a big comeback for several years, driven by the boom in eco-mobility.

Unlike a standard bicycle, these two- or even three-wheeled models are designed to carry goods or other people in addition to the rider.

We see more and more parents taking their offspring for a ride by installing them in a basket dedicated to this use and placed at the front or at the back.

Extended bike, double-carrier or tricycle fitted with a cart… There are a multitude of versions on the market.

And because pedaling for two, three, or even four people requires extra effort, manufacturers have taken advantage of electric assist technology to make it easier for users who want to take long trips without exhausting themselves.

Lower the bill

But who says bigger bike, also says bigger budget. If you can find a second-hand model around 500 euros, it will take at least 1,500 euros for a new cargo bike. As for the electric versions, they rarely show prices below 3,000 euros and easily climb to more than 5,000. However, since July 26, 2021, the purchase premium granted to electrically assisted bicycles has been extended to cargo models (electric or not) and to electric trailers at more advantageous conditions.

The less well-off households (with a reference tax income of less than 13,490 euros) can thus finance up to 40% of their new machine, up to a limit of 1,000 euros, even if they have not received any support from their local authority (unlike the classic bicycle bonus, which requires the accumulation of two subsidies).

The request must be made to the Services and Payment Agency (ASP) within six months of purchase.
