The French automobile market is still in slow motion.

Although summer has traditionally been a sluggish period for new vehicle sales, the numbers are not good.

A little more than 88,000 passenger cars were registered during the month of August, which represents a decrease of 15% compared to 2020 according to figures published this Wednesday by the Plateforme de la Filière Automobile (PFA) and relayed by

BFMTV

.

Commercial vehicle sales are not doing any better, dropping 17%.

In addition, taking into account all types of new vehicles, sales fell 16%.

However, over the first eight months of the year, the market stands at + 12.8% compared to 2020, which was marked by the collapse of the market, adds the PFA.

Renault seems to resist

While the number of passenger vehicle registrations fell 15% on an annual basis in August, this decline even reached 31.8% compared to August 2019, adds

Les Echos

. Some manufacturers resist better than others. Over the first eight months of the year, the Stellantis group (merger of the PSA group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) lost 35.9% compared to 2019, notes PFA in its report. Renault is doing better thanks to Dacia sales, but its sales have still seen a decrease of 23.4%.

This decline over the first half of the year could be linked to the shortage of electronic components which the automotive industry is fond of.

In our country, “the cars that make a lot of volumes are rather small entry-level cars, and they are not the ones that are preferred by the manufacturers when they have components, they prefer to put them on the larger vehicles. », Explains François Roudier, communication manager of the PFA.

Thus, by focusing on sales of higher-end vehicles, manufacturers favor margins to the detriment of higher sales volumes.
