A group of political formations that were key in the inauguration of

Pedro Sánchez

as Prime Minister is now demanding his support for the Congress of Deputies to investigate the sharp rise in electricity registered in August and its impact on the pocket of million homes and businesses. The request comes after the price of electricity reaches a new historical maximum this Thursday, exceeding 122.7 euros per megawatt hour, which is the sixth 'maximum record' in History so far this month.

The proposal to open a formal investigation in Parliament is led by

Más País-Equo and Compromís,

although other forces such as

Nueva Canarias and ERC

have also joined

.

Its objective is to summon different experts, analyze the different measures that could be approved to lower the cost of energy and, ultimately, check whether electricity companies are "manipulating the market," said Compromís deputy,

Joan Baldoví.

"It is a necessary debate where the experts should give their opinion. And politicians, instead of speaking, should listen, try to learn, and legislate based on what they have told us," he declared.

The calendar proposed by the applicants for the research is three months with the idea that the conclusions will be ready at the beginning of 2022 and rapid measures can be approved with the greatest possible political consensus. Sabanés, for its part, has targeted electricity companies directly by linking the investigation with "the lack of price control and unlimited profits" in the sector. "We are not going to be able to get out of this crisis without touching, cutting or rationalizing, call it what you want the absolutely scandalous benefits of the large electricity companies, which while people were having a hard time earned 5,000 million", he has sentenced.

Más País and Compromís have already started contacts with the different parliamentary formations to try to carry out their proposal, since among the three -including the Canary Islands- they only add up to five of a total of 350 deputies. The adhesion of ERC would give them an additional 13, but from within the organization they hope to gather support in the coming days.

The key is if

Unidos Podemos and PSOE

will join the proposal. The first training has been especially active in recent weeks in proposing measures to its government partners to try to lower the price of electricity. All his ideas, from the creation of a public power company to the intervention of the market setting fixed prices for nuclear and hydroelectric plants, have so far been despised by the vice president of Ecological Transition,

Teresa Ribera,

arguing a lack of analysis. Faced with these rudeness and given what the 'purple' formation is at stake with the electric flag - they promised to lower the bill and for the moment it has only skyrocketed - the logical thing is that they support the proposal. Sources of the group responded yesterday to this newspaper that there is still no decision made.

The situation is even more complex for the PSOE, which exercises energy powers in the Government and which until now has been unable to control the receipt with measures such as the reduction of VAT or the greater boost to renewable energy. Ribera herself wants to take the wheel of the electricity crisis again at the beginning of the political course and for this reason she will

appear in Congress next Monday

to explain the causes behind the increase in the megawatt hour. Socialist sources assure that they have not yet received the research proposal, and that is why they avoid responding about its potential support.

The truth is that autumn is very complicated for Ribera and

Pedro Sánchez himself

, with a price of electricity that according to the futures markets will continue to rise until at least next November.

The cost of the megawatt hour will break a new record today, exceeding 122.7 euros and shooting the monthly average above 103 euros, almost triple what it was worth in the same month of the previous year.

The Government attributes the increases to the increase in the price of natural gas worldwide, which ends up having an impact on the electricity sector through thermal power plants, and to the increase in the cost of CO2 emission rights in Europe in the heat of the ecological transition .

However, the price in Spain is already one of the highest among the great powers of the continent, only behind Italy.
