The online network Tiktok, which is popular with children and young people, is the most frequently downloaded app of the past year.

The Chinese smartphone app trumped the top dog Facebook and its messaging services Messenger and Whatsapp, as the market analysis company App Annie announced on Tuesday.

A year earlier, Tiktok was still in fourth place in the ranking.

The rise is also remarkable given Tiktok's problems with the US government.

Former US President Donald Trump tried to ban Tiktok from the US market for reasons of national security if the parent company Bytedance did not sell it to US investors, his successor Joe Biden lifted this order in June.

Instead, Biden ordered a general review of the security risks posed by foreign Internet services.

More than a billion users

Tiktok is believed to have more than a billion users worldwide.

Facebook uses the app's growth as an argument in a dispute with US antitrust authorities over its alleged market power.

The Facebook subsidiary Instagram has reacted to the popularity of the app by integrating its core function, namely short videos, into its own app. In return, Tiktok extended the maximum duration of the videos on its platform from one to three minutes.
