How many liposuction chaos is behind the death of an Internet celebrity?

Recently, Internet celebrity Xiao Ran died of a systemic infection caused by liposuction, causing multiple organ failure, and the rescue was ineffective.

One stone caused a thousand waves, and this accident pushed liposuction to the forefront.

  Are there risks in liposuction?

What is the chaos in the market?

How can consumers protect their rights after problems occur?

A reporter from the Workers’ Daily conducted an investigation.

"I thought liposuction was just a minor operation"

Recalling the liposuction surgery done 3 years ago, the 31-year-old Dou Wen was very scared.

On New Year's Day 2018, she set off from Guangzhou to a private beauty clinic in Chongqing for liposuction.

There are two projects she has done: thigh hydrodynamic ring suction and autologous fat buttocks.

"I thought that liposuction was just a minor operation, but it was actually a crime." Dou Wen said, she is 1.6 meters tall and weighs 105 kilograms. She chose liposuction in pursuit of perfection.

On the first night after the operation, Dou Wen was asked to stay in the hospital for observation. Once the anesthetic was over, the pain spread throughout the body.

According to Dou Wen, her thighs were covered with bruises for nearly one year after the operation, and she was unconscious when she pressed hard. Now three years have passed and she barely recovered.

Huang Xiao, who also underwent liposuction, complained that he was "disfigured"!

In 2019, she chose to go to a public hospital in Guangzhou for thigh liposuction and facial augmentation surgery. However, in the first week after the operation, she found a large pit at the center of her eyebrows. Later, she also developed symptoms such as unevenness and pigmentation on the thighs.

Huang Xiao revealed that there are more than a dozen patients in the same batch as her.

Among them, there were also those who were taken by doctors to an outside hospital for surgery on the grounds that "it's cheaper."

Irregular operation is easy to cause risks

"Liposuction is a routine plastic surgery project." said Yin Hongyu, the attending doctor at the Plastic Surgery Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. At present, the most widely used in China is negative pressure liposuction. Shuttle repeatedly to gradually suck out the deep fat.

"To get started, a plastic surgeon must first learn liposuction. It is risky, but not so exaggerated." Yin Hongyu said that the risk index of liposuction surgery increases positively with the amount of liposuction. If the amount of liposuction exceeds four to five thousand in a single session. Milliliters, it is prone to danger.

Yin Hongyu also said that irregular liposuction operations are likely to cause risks. Taking the internet celebrity Xiaoran as an example, the high probability of postoperative infection is caused by improper aseptic operation during the operation.

He explained that the situation after liposuction is dangerous because the fat layer in the operation area is connected to each other. Once infected, it will show diffuse cellulitis, which will then develop into sepsis and cause organ failure.

The "New Oxygen 2019 White Paper on the Medical Aesthetics Industry" shows that the Chinese people's aesthetic preference is "slim", and liposuction is the most popular among body surgery items.

However, behind the surge in market demand, there are very few institutions and doctors that provide services in compliance.

According to the "2020 China Medical Beauty Industry Insights White Paper" released by iResearch, in 2019, there are about 13,000 institutions with medical beauty qualifications in China, and 15% of them have illegal operations beyond the scope.

"The training period of regular plastic surgeons is 5 to 8 years, but now there is a big shortage of talents, and many who have not gone to school dare to do plastic surgery." said Ms. Yang, a senior practitioner in medical aesthetics.

The main difficulty in defending rights lies in obtaining evidence and compensation

"After the operation failed, I wanted to defend my rights, but because I didn't reach the disability level, I had to give up." Huang Xiao told reporters.

In response to this, Song Zhongqing, the director of Beijing Zhongzaicheng Law Firm, said that the main difficulty in safeguarding medical and aesthetic rights lies in the two links of evidence collection and compensation.

The so-called difficulty in obtaining evidence refers to the lack of evidence support for subsequent rights protection because many people did not check and save medical and aesthetic service contracts, cases and other materials during the operation.

The difficulty of compensation refers to the fact that since beauty is a subjective feeling, it is difficult to have an objective standard for the success of the operation. Usually, it is difficult to be compensated if it is not identified as a certain level of disability.

The reporter found out that there were 490 documents with the key word "liposuction". Many people had complications such as unevenness and scars due to liposuction, which caused medical service contract disputes with the hospital where the operation was performed.

Many of them were dismissed because they could not submit evidence that the medical institution and its medical staff were at fault, and that there was a causal relationship between the diagnosis and treatment behavior and the damage.

In view of this, Yin Hongyu said that all beauty seekers should pay attention to the pre-operative face-to-face consultation and carefully choose medical beauty items based on their own conditions.

Taking liposuction as an example, there are the following categories of people who are not suitable: high expectations of postoperative results, older or underage people, menstrual period, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and serious basic and organic diseases in the body .

It is reported that the National Health Commission, the Central Cyberspace Administration of China and other departments have launched a six-month special rectification of illegal medical beauty services nationwide from June 2021.
