The people in Saxony-Anhalt have to pay significantly more money for beer.

In July, the average beer price was five percent higher than in the same period last year, as the State Statistical Office in Halle announced on Monday.

According to statisticians, pils, lager and black beer were on average 4.3 percent more expensive than last year.

The price level for wheat or Alt beer rose by 9.5 percent, and for mixed beer beverages by around 11 percent.

According to the statistics authority, the main driver of the price development was the reduction in VAT from July 2020, which had depressed prices and expired in January of this year.

In the past 20 years, beer in Saxony-Anhalt has been around 32 percent more expensive on average. Compared with the rise in consumer prices over the same period (plus 30.6 percent), the rise in beer prices was only just above average inflation.
