Before 2022, Telsa's 25,000 Supercharging stations spread over 2,700 charging stations around the world will gradually be opened to all models of electric cars, reports

Electrek

.

In France, the charging network for owners of these vehicles will thus double in volume, thanks to the addition of the 80 terminals of the Californian brand.

Originally, these terminals were only reserved for owners of a Tesla vehicle.

This decision was taken with the assumed aim of offering a competitive advantage in the context of the sale of these cars.

In particular, the Supercharharger private network offered a recharging price that was often lower than the competition, i.e. 0.30 euros per minute on average, compared to 0.80 per minute for the Ionity network, which is aimed at a large group of brands. (Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Kia…).

No material constraint in Europe

In Europe, the advantage was also twofold for Tesla drivers, since the vehicles remained rechargeable at any other terminal if necessary, the manufacturer having aligned itself with the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard.

The opening of Tesla terminals to competition will therefore not imply any material change in Europe.

Conversely, in the United States, Tesla made its own connector.

The terminals will therefore have to be adapted.

At present, no further explanation has been given by Tesla for this opening up to competition.

The price of Supercharging stations for non-Tesla cars was also not disclosed.
