Xinjiang’s first desert expressway is being ramped up to pave oil-surfaced roads. The road will pass through the Gurbantunggut Desert and the hinterland of the Junggar Basin, passing through Fuhai County, Changji Prefecture, and Wujiaqu City along the way, ending in Urumqi City.

The desert highway, known as S21 Highway, starts in Beitun City, the 10th Division of the Altay Regional Corps, with a total length of more than 340 kilometers and a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

The completed S21 highway will enrich the northern Xinjiang tourist ring line, promote the economic, social, and cultural integration of the local and corps in the three-hour economic circle of Urumqi and the Altay region, realize the co-construction and sharing of transportation infrastructure and public services, and promote the development of areas along the route. It is of great significance.
