The shortage of semiconductors does not only affect the automotive industry, the computer field or game consoles.

This phenomenon, due to high demand during a health crisis, could well have repercussions on even more people because it could lead to a shortage of bank cards from 2022, reports BFM TV on Monday.

Three billion cards issued per year

"If the situation does not improve, there will be a shortage of millions of cards, and this will directly affect consumers around the world as they will not be able to obtain a new or renewed bank card", explained Jacques Doucerain, president of the Smart Payment Association (SPA), quoted by BFM TV.

In a press release, this German organization bringing together the main European providers of security technologies for the financial sector "calls on government bodies as well as banking and payments players to improve the situation for the benefit of consumers".

If professionals in this sector are increasingly concerned, it is because 3 billion bank cards are issued each year.

In addition, cards compliant with the EMV standard - Europay, MasterCard and Visa - represent 90% of traditional payments and 60% of online payments.

A shortage of bank cards could therefore lead to a decrease in consumption worldwide.
