The tourism sector once again falters before a new script twist in the coronavirus pandemic and its effects are noticeable this Monday on the Ibex 35. Securities such as
Meliá Hotels, IAG, Aena or Amadeus
have turned
red again
before the advance of the infections by the Delta variant and the new restrictions that European countries are studying to try to deal with it.
The first alerts came from
Germany
, where Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned about the possibility of banning travel from the United Kingdom. Shortly after, it was the President of the Spanish Government,
Pedro Sánchez
, who announced that Spain will require a negative PCR or complete vaccine to all citizens who come from the United Kingdom and that the measure will begin to be applied within 72 hours.
Sánchez has justified the measure in light of the coronavirus data recorded by the United Kingdom,
"well above 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days
.
"
Some data associated with the Delta variant of Covid-19 and that has led the United Kingdom to delay its reopening.
Sánchez has also assured that in this context, a decision must be made to apply additional measures in Spain, and has specified that he announces it so that tour operators take it into account.
The announcement comes just a few days after the United Kingdom included the Balearic Islands in its
green list
of safe destinations to travel to and revives the fears of tourist companies that were beginning to see some light after more than a year with the activity almost stop.
Summer at risk
The summer season is at risk and investors know it.
As a result of this fear, the shares of the Meliá Hoteles chain fell 5.5% in this morning's session, while the air conglomerate IAG, which includes companies such as Iberia, British Airways or Vueling, lost almost 5% .
Also in negative are Amadeus (-2.1%) and Aena (-2.9%), which also has the opinion of the CNMC that opposes an increase in rates to airport stores.
The general decline in the sector is behind the decline in the Ibex 35 at the beginning of the week, which loses more than 1.5% and at the moment it can
not save the 9,000 points
with which it had started the day.
"Technically, the Ibex 35 will have the challenge of strengthening the psychological barrier of 9,000 points after the doubts of the last sessions, now having the challenge of sustaining 9,100 points, a situation that will allow the index to enter within the lateral range harvested from last May, "says
Diego Morín
, an analyst at IG Markets.
The resurgence of infections in several European countries and the cases detected in Mallorca as a result of a massive outbreak that has affected hundreds of students across the country is forcing investors to remain cautious in a generalized way.
In the Ibex 35, most of the values remain negative in the middle of the session and only Acciona and Solaria manage to score rises above 1%.
The rest of European squares have also started the week in red, although with less bulky declines than the Spanish one.
In fact, the
Cac 40
in Paris and the
Ftse Mib
in Milan fell 0.5%, while the
Dax in Frankfurt
fell slightly 0.1%.
