The federal government is planning a quota for the purchase of green steel by the auto industry. "In order to stimulate green lead markets for climate-neutral and recycled raw materials, a dualism of introducing product quotas for CO2-efficient products and promoting additional costs will be implemented in a transitional period," says a draft for the "immediate climate protection program 2022" from which the news agency Reuters quoted. And further there is according to the information: "The program will be introduced for green steel in the automotive industry." Quota regulations should therefore be checked for other basic material industries.

The motor vehicle tax is also to be changed in order to promote more climate-friendly models.

"In the next few years, the promotion of electric and hybrid vehicles should have a stronger steering effect towards emission-free models," says the draft.

"In the next few years, the motor vehicle tax should also be geared more towards emissions in order to achieve a stronger focus on emission-free models."

On the other hand, according to the information, the originally planned obligation for solar roofs on new buildings is off the table.

Unlike in the past, the current draft does not provide for any obligation to install photovoltaic or solar thermal systems in new buildings and after extensive renovations.

The cabinet is to deal with the “immediate climate protection program 2022” this Wednesday.

As a result, the plan to include the landlords in the costs of the CO2 tax is off the table.

The new expansion targets solar and wind for the year 2030 have also been deleted.

However, there is apparently dissent in the government about the solar roof requirement.

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze described them as useful on Deutschlandfunk.

Otherwise, adjustments would have to be made in five or six years in order to achieve a climate-neutral building stock by 2045, said the SPD politician.
