Thanks to the Covid health crisis, punctuated by teleworking, more and more French people are leaving their city to settle in a smaller municipality.

A trend already observed a few months after the first confinement but which seems to become a fundamental movement.

To realize this, just look at the number of transactions in medium-sized cities.

In 2020, they increased by 4.5%, according to the barometer of notaries. 

Transactions exploded in Besançon

The figure may seem low.

But if we compare to the national trend, which is -4%, these cities of more or less 40,000 inhabitants attracted buyers last year.

In some municipalities, this increase is much more marked.

Transactions have exploded to 110% in Besançon, 20% in Lorient or even 15% in Agen.

A cost of living "affordable compared to that of large cities"

If they attract so much, it is because they combine several attractions.

The “cost of living” is “affordable compared to that of large metropolises”, explains Peggy Montesinos, of the Superior Council of Notaries.

She adds that transport is more developed today, which makes these cities easy to access.
