The president of the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), Cani Fernández, warns that the new electricity tariff system may cause a loss of comfort and a higher cost of electricity for homes, but also considers that those consumers who are more educated and know how the receipt works will be able to obtain savings on their bill.

"The consumer plays a fundamental role and the new toll structure implies greater differentiation to provide price signals that allow efficient use of the networks and avoid unnecessary investments. The more educated consumer is that he can achieve greater savings on his bill", he pointed out during his speech at the second edition of

the International Expansion Forum.

The CNMC has developed jointly with the Government the new structure of tolls and charges that came into force on June 1.

This change introduces three different sections for the cost of electricity, with hours 'valley', 'flat' and 'peak' with prices that can double depending on the time of consumption.

Fernández has defended that this model provides a clearer price signal for the consumer and will allow him to make better decisions in a context of 'revolution' in the energy sector with the introduction of self-consumption and distributed generation.

"The energy consumer must be at the center and participate in the electricity markets in the same way as other agents of electricity generation," he said.

In any case, the president of the CNMC has indicated that it will be necessary to monitor the new model and, where appropriate, make adjustments.

"It takes time to reach conclusions and be able to interpret."
