The police then responded by firing tear gas can we see on videos posted on social networks.

These protests began on May 23 in the city of Sohar.

They then went to several other cities in the country.

Protesters are particularly demanding jobs.

In response,

Sultan Haitham ben Tarek

therefore called on the government and the private sector to speed up the implementation of a plan.

This aims to create more than 32,000 jobs, including 2,000 in the public sector, for young Omanis.

Since the appointment of the new sultan in January 2020, this is the first major wave of protest in Oman.

This country in the Arabian Peninsula, already facing a critical financial situation since 2014, is also suffering from the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sultanate is in fact closed to tourists even though this sector is essential for its strategy of economic diversification.
