"I think it is time to stop saying that old phrase: 'let them invent'", says

Ángel Luis Arias

, CEO of Enaire. And he does not say it for free, but the public company Enaire, Spain's air navigation manager, and the private company Indra, one of the main global technology and consulting companies and winner of

the National Innovation Award

, have just presented one of the most

cutting-edge

projects of 2021:

Startical

. "This is a Spain brand initiative," he proudly explains.

In order to control air traffic, planes must be seen in the air, something that has normally been done by radar. Enaire communicates with the pilot and controller and provides the aircraft with systems so that they know their location. However, starting with Startical, that will be done via satellites. The project consists of taking off a constellation of nanosatellites, of low orbit (height), to be able to have satellite surveillance and communication services. Thanks to this system, coverage will be covered especially in remote and oceanic areas where there is usually none due to the fact that current air navigation systems are based on terrestrial infrastructures.

Incorporated in the form of a commercial company, Arias defines Startical as "totally pioneer". And he adds: "It is dual, because it is surveillance and at the same time voice and data communication." The constellation of nanosatellites, which will be approximately 200, will provide great benefits to optimize flight routes, since thanks to satellite communication in remote areas, pilots will be able to avoid airspaces with adverse weather conditions. This will increase the safety, efficiency and punctuality of flights, something that will translate into a reduction of

13 million tons per year

in CO2 emissions.

The project will be carried out in two phases. The first is an investment of

29.2 million euros in innovation and satellite research

that will be carried out between 2021 and 2023- In it, tests will be carried out to demonstrate the technological and economic viability of the project. The second, scheduled between 2024 and 2027, will be the deployment of the satellites. This initiative will allow Spain to position itself in the sector of satellite provision of air navigation services at a global level and will promote the creation of 1,500 jobs in the short term and up to 4,500 in the medium term.

In addition, for Arias, this conjunction between the public and private sectors is harmonized with the Government's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan ("Spain Can"). "This collaboration is going to make the solution and the product that we find much more powerful. In addition, we go 50% / 50%, we risk both one and the other," said Arias.

Both companies foresee that a constellation of these dimensions and of global coverage will generate a driving

effect on technological and industrial development,

and that it will be beneficial for the economy and society.

In this sense, they consider that Startical constitutes a unique opportunity for the aerospace industry and for other industries, and that it will provide interaction between the university, technological progress and the industry by creating greater spaces for collaboration.
