5G large-scale promotion needs a breakthrough

  Our reporter Li Pengda

The 5G network is a key infrastructure supporting the digital, networked, and intelligent transformation of the economy and society.

As one of the key technologies in the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, 5G will be deeply integrated with big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies to empower the development of various economic and social fields.

At the same time, further breakthroughs are needed for the large-scale promotion of 5G.

"With the joint efforts of all parties, my country's 5G network is leading the way." At the 2021 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day conference held a few days ago, Liu Liehong, the deputy minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, stated that the 5G standard essential patents declared in the European Telecommunications Standardization Association In my country, Chinese companies continue to maintain global leadership.

5G is accelerating its integration into thousands of industries to help its digital transformation.

The largest commercial network is built

"As of the end of March, my country has built a total of 819,000 5G base stations, accounting for more than 70% of the world, and the number of 5G terminal connections has exceeded 280 million. The world's largest 5G commercial network has been established in China." Wang Zhiqin, Vice President of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, introduced , China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom have all completed the large-scale deployment of 5G independent networking, laying a good network foundation for industry applications.

New application scenarios spawned by 5G networks will drive continuous innovation in information and communication technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data centers, and edge computing.

Operators and Internet companies are optimistic about the cloud computing and data center market.

In 2020, the data center construction investment will reach 300 billion yuan, and this number will increase to 1.4 trillion yuan in the next three years. Forecasts from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology indicate that the future data center industry will be a blue ocean.

“While 5G promotes the development of digital industrialization, it will effectively enhance the digitalization level of my country’s industry and has huge development potential. It is estimated that by 2025, 5G will drive 1.2 trillion yuan in network construction investment and generate 8 trillion yuan in related information consumption. The added value of the economy is 2.93 trillion yuan." Liu Liehong said.

The 5G network quality and terminal supply capabilities have been significantly enhanced.

According to the measured data of the 5G cloud measurement platform of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, in the first quarter, my country's 5G user experience download speed was 374.2Mbps, and the upload speed was 31.4Mbps, both of which were more than 10 times that of 4G.

According to data from the International Speed Testing Agency in March, my country's mobile network speed ranks 4th in the world, and its fixed broadband speed ranks 16th in the world.

Industry industry applications are successively landing

"At present, my country's 5G converged applications have passed the creative stage and have begun to land. Nearly 1,300 participating projects in the'Blooming Cup' competition have been commercialized." Wang Zhiqin introduced that promising large-scale commercial application scenarios have been built in factories, medical and other fields, and have formed A business cooperation model led by operators, industry service providers, and industry customers.

In the manufacturing process, 5G is combined with ultra-high-definition video, sensors, and control systems to complete quality inspection, AGV (automated navigation vehicle) transportation, and real-time monitoring of production data to help improve quality and efficiency.

"With its large bandwidth, low latency, and wide connection, 5G can help us accomplish many tasks that were impossible before." In the Liansu Smart Factory in Foshan, Guangdong Province, Jin Chao, vice president of Liansu Group Co., Ltd. According to the introduction, the company signed a strategic agreement with China Mobile Guangdong Co., Ltd. Foshan Branch in 2019 to jointly build a benchmarking project for the application of "5G + intelligent manufacturing" in the pipeline building material manufacturing industry.

Since the building materials pipeline products produced by Liansu are widely used in underground closed scenes such as water, electricity, coal, communications, etc., they are the "stalkers" behind super projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Beijing Daxing International Airport. Therefore, the quality of the products And the safety performance requirements are extremely high.

“In the past, we manually judged whether the product is defective, inefficient and error-prone. Nowadays, the cross-sectional images of pipes and metal parts taken by the high-definition camera are transmitted to the cloud through the 5G network, supplemented by artificial intelligence technology, can quickly calculate The result of product defect detection has effectively improved the product yield." Huang Jinchao said.

"In the past, the AGV in the factory was connected via WiFi, and sometimes it was subjected to electromagnetic interference. Moreover, when the car passed through different wireless access points, it was prone to unstable network connection, which caused the vehicle to stop and affect the efficiency of transportation." Guangdong Mobile Foshan Branch Yu Mengying, product director of 5G application modules, introduced that 5G can provide a stable and reliable network operating environment for AGVs on the move, allowing them to seamlessly cooperate with fully automated processes, and product sorting is faster.

In the medical field, remote consultations, mobile monitoring, and 5G ambulances have moved from trials to clinical trials in medical institutions at all levels.

In the village clinic of Meide Village, Haikou City, Hainan Province, villagers who came to see the doctor told reporters that in the past, they always had to go to the township hospital or even the municipal hospital, which not only wasted time, but might also delay the condition.

Nowadays, doctors in village clinics can use 5G network, telemedicine platform and all-in-one workstations to remotely connect the results of physical examinations to higher-level hospitals for real-time diagnosis.

“We have upgraded 7 Class-A hospitals in Hainan Province, county-level hospitals in 18 cities and counties, 340 township-level medical institutions, and 2,693 village clinics in Hainan Province. Remote diagnosis centers have been set up in 6 Class-A hospitals. Through 5G network and primary medical institutions for remote diagnosis, so that patients can enjoy high-quality medical resources without entering the city." said Fan Yongan, head of Hainan Unicom's delivery center.

Shortcomings need to be filled as soon as possible

"Although the development of 5G has completed the leap from 0 to 1, but how to realize the promotion and replication from 1 to N will still go through a very difficult process." Wang Zhiqin admitted frankly that at the commercial level, the demand side still believes that 5G networks are used. The cost is high and the terminal equipment is expensive. However, the supply side is due to the serious fragmentation of industry demand. Many applications are highly customized and still remain in the "model room" stage. The input-output ratio is low, and the business model is unclear. Unable to achieve large-scale development.

"At present, my country's 5G industry application is in its infancy, and it is still necessary to further adapt technology and scenarios to achieve scale replication." Wang Zhiqin suggested that the establishment of 5G application standards should be accelerated, and inter-industry agreement intercommunication and standard mutual recognition should be completed; adhere to the principle of moderate advancement , Strengthen network construction in key areas and industries, and improve network service quality; continue to research and innovate, break through technology and industrialization bottlenecks, and promote 5G terminal products to mature...

Ge Qi, an adjunct professor at the School of Economics and Management of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, believes that 5G's large bandwidth, low latency, and massive access capabilities have realized the transformation of mobile communications from a dedicated technology for personal services to a general technology for thousands of industries, which fully demonstrates The potential and capabilities of 5G as a social information infrastructure.

Unlike special technologies that focus on functions and performance, the application and promotion of general technologies are more critical to cost and benefit.

"Only the universal technology that customers can afford is a truly good technology. The high procurement cost of 5G base stations, the expensive operation and maintenance of electricity, and the difficulty of digital integration of applications require breakthroughs as soon as possible to truly change society." Ge Qi said.
