The UAE has been ranked first in the world in several global competitiveness indicators that measure the development and quality of communications infrastructure around the world for the year 2020.

A report issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and Digital Government, titled "The UAE is a Leading Country in the Communications and Information Technology Sector 2020", included the most important results achieved by the country in the telecommunications sector last year, based on the numbers and indicators issued by relevant international organizations specialized in issuing relevant indicators. The link, as part of the Authority’s efforts through which it contributes to 17 global competitiveness reports containing 142 indicators of competitiveness.

The report monitored, in numbers and facts, the dimensions of the vital role that the telecommunications sector plays in the leadership of the country, embodying the authority’s vision that states that the UAE is a pioneer in the communications and information technology sector, a vision that is in harmony with the state’s orientation to make the UAE one of the best countries in the world in various fields.

The report also focused on the most important results achieved by the country in many global indicators, which indicate the success of the country's telecommunications sector in achieving its global goals.

Broadband

According to the report, the UAE ranked first in the world in the rate of mobile broadband Internet subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, and the index of public-private partnership and its impact on technological development.

The UAE also ranked first in the world in the index of competition in the Internet and telephone sectors, and the government's purchase of advanced technology products, and the first in the world in the speed of mobile broadband, and the penetration rate of the optical fiber network connecting to homes.

The country has maintained the first position in the world in many global competitiveness indicators that measure the development and quality of the telecommunications infrastructure in the world, as it ranked first in the world in the percentage of mobile phone network coverage of the population and access to mobile phone service.

Technological development

With regard to the indicator of the use of communications and information technology, the UAE advanced in the global ranking from 24th in 2017 to second place globally, according to the last Global Competitiveness Report issued in 2019. The UAE also topped the world countries in investing in infrastructure, according to global competitiveness indicators that measure the level of countries ’investment in infrastructure, and ranked third globally in the index of investment in telecommunications services, and fourth globally in the index of foreign direct investment and technology transfer.

The report included the most important results achieved by the country in indicators related to the ability of the telecommunications infrastructure to keep pace with the changes, the readiness of the communications and information technology sector for the future, the e-government survey, and the global indicator of readiness for variables.

Accumulated effort

The Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and Digital Government, Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, said, “The advanced results achieved by the UAE in the global indicators of the telecommunications sector are a reflection of the leadership’s directives to strengthen the telecommunications sector, as it is one of the main engines of development in many sectors, and the gateway to entering the era of the Industrial Revolution. The fourth, with its developments, such as the Internet of Things, the fifth generation, technologies supported by artificial intelligence, and smart transportation.

He added that the results revealed by the report are the result of a persistent and accumulated effort over the years in which the authority’s work teams have participated, along with the partners in the private sector, represented in the form of a head of “Etisalat” and “Du” companies.

Al-Mansouri described the sector’s march from the beginnings of the federation until today, as a story of pride and pride that we tell through this report and facts and figures, to be a witness to a side of the process of the Union state, which we celebrate its 50th year, and open a new page for the next 50 years, during which we are preparing for more efforts in the context of Making the future worthy of our country.
