The majority of Germans are planning a summer vacation at home.

This is the result of an evaluation by the online holiday home broker HomeToGo, which is exclusively available to WELT AM SONNTAG.

According to this, 57 percent of all search queries on the portal for July and August were for travel destinations within Germany.

That is an increase of 80 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Particularly popular destinations are the North and Baltic Sea coasts, but also Bavaria, the Mecklenburg Lake District and Rügen.

Around ten percent of users searched for locations in Croatia and Italy, places two and three in a country comparison.

Germans also want to spend their vacation at a distance.

Only about every eighth German citizen moves to a city, as an additional online survey on behalf of HomeToGo shows.

More than every third person wants to go to the forests and mountains instead, every second to the sea.

For the evaluation, HomeToGo analyzed around 15 million search queries between January 1st and March 29th with check-in times in July and August and at the same time surveyed 300 users who represent a representative cross-section of the population.

The Federal Government's Tourism Commissioner, Thomas Bareiß (CDU), is optimistic about the upcoming summer holiday season.

"We expect the delivery of almost 80 million vaccine doses for Germany by the end of June and are continuously improving our test strategies," said Bareiß WELT AM SONNTAG.

“That is why I am convinced that traveling in Germany and Europe will definitely be easier and safer again.

People finally want to get out again. "

However, it is essential to continue to maintain certain security measures.

The tourism officer demands that, as with the definition of risk areas, not only focusing on the incidence values.

"It is important that we get away from the quarantine rules and that testing plays a bigger role," said Bareiß.
