Egypt: Building collapses in Cairo causing many casualties

At least 10 people were killed and around 30 injured in the collapse of a ten-story building in Cairo on Saturday, March 27.
Rescuers continue to clear the land in an attempt to find survivors.
The government has been hunting illegal constructions for two years, with building collapses being frequent.

Shortly before 3 a.m., the 40-year-old building collapsed in the popular district of Guésr el-Séweis in northeast Cairo.
Witnesses say they were awakened by a noise resembling an explosion.
According to the preliminary investigation, work carried out in the basement of the building, used as a factory and depot, affected concrete columns and cracks appeared.
This prompted many residents to flee the building, which undoubtedly reduced the loss of life.
Collapses are frequent in Egypt because of the dilapidated buildings or recent constructions that do not meet standards.
For two years, the government has made an unpopular hunt for illegal constructions: three million offenses have so far been recorded.
