The use of ATMs has decreased significantly over the past twelve months.

"As a result of the corona crisis, the demand for cash at our machines has plummeted by 75 percent," says Kersten Trojanus, managing director of the ATM operator IC Cash and spokesman for the ATMs working group, an association of machine operators that also includes providers such as Euronet and Cashpoint.

Together they have 5000 devices, which corresponds to around ten percent of all ATMs in Germany.

A larger part of it is hardly needed anymore.

“Around 1,000 devices from the consortium were temporarily taken out of service due to a lack of demand, and 200 to 300 were completely dismantled,” says Trojanus.

The financial institutions also recorded a significant decline.

At Commerzbank, it is said: "We have recorded an average decline in demand for cash of between ten and 15 percent over the past twelve months."

The savings banks reported an intermittent run on the ATMs last spring.

Some consumers initially feared that the cash supply might not work during pandemic times.

When their suspicions subsided, the demand for cash returned to normal.
