The coronavirus crisis has had an impact on the number of vehicle thefts in France.

In 2020, crimes of this kind have decreased by 13% compared to 2019, with all the same 121,500 thefts recorded by the Ministry of the Interior, reports

BFMTV

.

This represents a flight every four minutes given the three months of confinement in 2020, this drop could have been more significant, according to the latest Flight Observatory of the company Coyote Secure.

The number of thefts fell 48% in periods of containment, but this activity jumped 70% in September, a "historic record", according to Coyote.

Scooters, easy targets

The most targeted vehicles are SUVs, with 3.1 flights per 1,000 models, compared to an average of 2.4 per thousand for all passenger cars.

67% of these thefts concern French brands.

The most frequently stolen vehicles are the DS7 or the Peugeot 3008. Next come the city cars, with 2.9 thefts per 1,000 cars.

Two-wheelers are also very popular, with nearly 6% of thefts in 2020. Considering only scooters, the rate reaches 10%.

This gap between two-wheelers and other vehicles is explained by the greater ease of stealing them.

Their small size simplifies concealment and disassembly.

Two regions are mainly affected by thefts: Ile-de-France (5.9 per 1,000 vehicles) and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (3.9 per 1,000 vehicles).

Business also grew strongly in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (2.2).

These three regions alone account for more than 50% of crimes.
