Not all, but you can still see dangerous delivery motorcycles on the streets.

However, most of the motorcycles are running on the road without courier insurance.

Reporter Park Chan-geun reported on why insurance premiums are so expensive.

<Reporter>

45-year-old A, a motorcycle delivery worker in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.

An accident occurred while delivering food six years ago.

[Mr. A/delivery agent: Grandma suddenly collapsed and grabbed her leg...

] The

treatment fee for the injured grandmother was over 30 million won, but at the time, the insurance was not covered because of the high premium.

[Mr. A/delivery agent: I didn't have money, so I borrowed it.

If you pay back, mobile phone bills are also overdue, for example, but renters are overdue.]

According to the delivery agency industry, the number of delivery agencies that has increased sharply since the spread of Corona 19 last year is estimated to be more than 100,000, of which delivery agencies are used. Only 36,000 people have insurance.

How expensive is the insurance premium, so the subscription rate is so low?

I signed up for insurance with Mr. B in his 20s, who is a delivery agency in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.

[Because I was trying to figure out how much.] Let's tell you what

you need to sign up, and we present a premium of over 10 million won.

[The insurance premium is 1,2546,000 won per year.

(12,546,000 won? Is it 12 million won?)]

Insurance premiums vary slightly depending on age and accident history, but in the case of a motorcycle delivery agency, the insurance premium presented by the insurance company is usually 5 million won per year. In some cases, it exceeds the maximum of 13 ~ 14 million won.

[Mr. B/delivery agent: I can't afford it because the insurance premium is too expensive...

]

[C/Delivery agency insurance subscribers: It's not easy.

(Insurance premium) Because it takes about a month and a half to make

money

.] The

insurance industry argues that insurance premiums are also expensive because motorcycles have a high accident rate and high insurance premiums are paid.

Is it really?

Last year, when we obtained data from the Korea Insurance Development Institute, we paid 2 million won in insurance per year for each insured person using a delivery machine.

Even taking into account the various costs of insurance companies, they were offering expensive insurance premiums to motorcycle delivery drivers.

There are few subscribers here and there are many cases in the red due to the high accident rate.

[Jung Heung-joon/Professor of Business Administration, Seoul National University of Science and Technology: If you want to sign up for delivery drivers with a high amount of money, don't do it.

.] In

response to this, the Non-life Insurance Association said, "I am still looking for a way to lower insurance premiums," saying, "There are still many cases of operating products with a deficit."

While motorcycle insurance policies are in place, every day is a dazzling moment on the streets.

Is there an alternative?

Experts advise that delivery platform companies such as the People of Delivery should find a way to increase the subscription rate by subsidizing a portion of the insurance premium.

[Kim Chang-gi/Professor of Business Administration, Korea University: There is a way to set a certain portion of the fees paid by riders and platform fees as insurance premiums and accumulate them to support the riders.]

Instead of using an existing insurance company,

there is a way to support the riders.

There are also movements to help mutual aid by forming mutual aid associations that pay money and use this money to pay for compensation.

[Kim Jin-wook/Director of the Korean motorcycle delivery agency cooperative: (Cooperative) is not a corporate organization for profit purposes.

The operating cost can be reduced a lot by itself...

.] There

is an urgent need to prepare innovative and diverse measures to increase the rate of motorcycle insurance coverage for pedestrians and vehicle drivers as well as delivery agents.
