The widespread sale of corona self-tests in retail has started.

At the discounter Aldi, the tests have been available directly at the cash register since Saturday morning.

In many places, however, they were sold out after a short time.

The discounter Lidl also started selling corona rapid tests for private consumption on Saturday - initially via its online shop.

The offer is "an important step to protect the population from the virus".

Users can use the self-tests independently by taking a swab in the front nasal area and get the result within 15 to 20 minutes.

The Rewe and Edeka supermarkets also want to start selling soon.

The drugstore chains Rossmann and dm are planning the start for Tuesday.

Pharmacies also want to offer the products.

At Aldi, the quantity of tests produced in Germany is initially limited to one pack per customer.

A pack costs around 25 euros.

It contains five tests.

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd had already pointed out in advance that the promotional goods could be sold out on the first day of the promotion if there was a very high demand.

But this is a first batch, more goods are already on the way, said a spokesman for Aldi Süd.

The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices issued the first special approvals for tests for self-use by laypeople on February 24th.

So far there are seven special approvals.

The regular way of bringing medical products onto the market is the CE marking by certification bodies. The Federal Institute assumes that manufacturers will also use the regular route.
