That did not take long: Amazon adapted the new symbol of its smartphone app after some users apparently felt reminded of a Hitler mustache.

The world's largest online retailer recently replaced the app icon that had long been a shopping cart.

The new app logo was based on the design of the Amazon packages with the arrow curved into a smile.

In addition, there was a strip of adhesive tape at the upper end - and it was precisely this that reminded some Internet users of Adolf Hitler's characteristic mustache.

The prongs have been straightened

In the changed, later variant of the new app icon, a corner of the adhesive tape strip was bent over and the previously jagged lower tear-off edge made straight.

Amazon said it made the changes before the global introduction of the new logo on the basis of customer reactions in the first test markets.

At the same time, however, there was also a certain level of arousal in social media.

Now it is officially said: "We have designed the new app symbol to arouse anticipation, enthusiasm and fun when customers start their shopping tour on their mobile phone - just like when they see our parcels on their doorstep" the company said on Wednesday about the new design.

The reactions on the internet were mixed.

Many Twitter users judged the company's decision, but also the previously expressed criticism, as "ridiculous".
